    Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the discharge of NOx in time of accelerating a lean-burn engine without almost incurring the worsening of fuel consumption. CONSTITUTION:In such an engine as performing lean-burn control in order to improve the extent of fuel consumption in time of stationary driving, supposing an accelerating start is detected, rather large fuel increment control than the ordinary one is carried out (step 109 to 112) so as to become an air-fuel ratio in a specified area in and around a theoretical air-fuel ratio where exhaust gas performance comes better from relations between an NOx control rate by a three-way catalyst and an NOx generating amount, and this control is continued (steps 116, 113, 114) till the specified time T0 has elapsed since acceleration has started. In consequence, in time of acceleration, it will not get into an area being bad in the exhaust gas performance, and thereby a good accelerating capacity is securable.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To efficiently purify NOX in exhaust gas together with CO and hydrocarbons(HC) by bringing the exhaust gas of oxygen-excess atmosphere into contact with a catalyst of platinum and lanthanum deposited on a porous carrier. CONSTITUTION:A catalyst of platinum and lanthanum as a rare earth metal deposited on a porous carrier is used as a catalyst which simultaneously effects oxidization of CO and HC and reduction of NOX in the exhaust gas from an automobile on which a lean-burn engine is mounted. The porous carrier is alumina, zeolite, zirconia, silica alumina, silica, etc., which carries lanthanum by 0.05-1.0mol/L. By bringing the exhaust gas of oxygen-excess atmosphere into contact with this catalyst, NOX, NO and HC in the exhaust gas can be purified both in a normal driving state and in a transition state.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To miniaturize an exhaust gas purifying facility by feeding some exhaust gas to the second expanding room and blowing off the exhaust gas in the first expanding room to outside when a filter is regenerated. CONSTITUTION:A filter 74 is installed in a pass between the first expanding room 13 and the second expanding room 23. Usually the second inlet pipe 33 and the second outlet pipe 37 are shut by the first controlling valve 41 and the second controlling valve 46, respectively. At regenerating the filter 74, the first and the second controlling valves 41 and 46 are opened to blow off the exhaust stored in the first inlet pipe 32 to outside from the second outlet pipe 37. Also some exhaust gas in the second inlet pipe 33 is blew off to the filter 74 and remaining gas is blown off the outside from the first outlet pipe 36. By this process, the back flow structure for the exhaust gas becomes simple to miniaturize the exhaust gas purifying facility.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To control an engine accurately regardless of the influence of the EGR gas other than the fresh air, by detecting the partial pressure of oxygen of the suction air, and correcting the engine factors which are controlled by the fuel injection quantity, the ignition timing, and the like, depending on the output value of the oxygen partial pressure. CONSTITUTION:The supercharged air from a turbocharger 38 is mixed with the fuel injected from an injector 42 and delivered to a combustion chamber 18 as a mixture gas through a throttle valve 34 and a surge tank 32 while receiving the return flow of the exhaust gas from an EGR valve 46. In this case, a control circuit 54 finds the engine load by the suction gas pressure signal from a pressure sensor 55, and computes the fuel injection quantity and the ignition time responding to the engine load, while detecting the fresh air amount in the suction air from the partial pressure of oxygen by a suction air side oxygen sensor 70, corrects the computed values of the fuel injection quantity and the ignition timing depending on the detected oxygen partial pressure, and controls the driving of the injector 42 and an ignition plug 20. Moreover, the feedback control is executed by the output of an exhaust gas side oxygen sensor 68. In such a way, an accurate engine control can be carried out.

CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of noble metal is supported on a carrier which is formed by an oxide or double oxide of at least one kind of metal selected among rare earth metals and group IVA metals of the periodic table to form a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas. Otherwise, an oxide or double oxide of at least one kind of metal selected among rare earth metals and group IVA metals of the periodic table and at least one kind of noble metal are supported on alumina carrier to form a catalyst for purification of exhaust gas. Since the oxide or double oxide is used, NOx in exhaust gas from an automobile on the lean side can efficiently be removed. The noble metal is Pt, Pd or Rh, preferably Pt or Rh.
