PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina sol capable of preparing, at a low temperature, a homogeneous and dense thin alumina film on the surface of a substrate formed by a metal having a low melting point such as copper, aluminum, etc. and a preparation method of the same.SOLUTION: A sol including colloid particles of aluminum hydroxide and crystalline particles of aluminum oxide is prepared by dissolving an aluminum salt into water provided as a solvent so as to provide an aqueous aluminum salt solution, by generating a precipitate of aluminum hydroxide by adding and dissolving urea into the aqueous aluminum salt solution and then heating the resulting solution, and by deflocculating the resulting precipitate with a deflocculant.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer composition easily processable even when containing up to 80% of filler, and a simple and cost-effective method for producing the same relative to coating methods. SOLUTION: The flame retardant polymer composition includes (a) 20-60 wt.% of a thermoplastic material and/or a crosslinked or crosslinkable elastomer, and, as a flame retardant, (b) 40-80 wt.% of aluminum hydroxide having the following physical properties: a BET specific surface area of 3-5 mg 2 /g; an average particle size, d 50 , of 1.0-1.5 μm; a residual moisture content of 0.1-0.4%; oil absorption of 19-23%; water absorption of 0.4-0.6 mL/g, or 40-80 wt.% of aluminum hydroxide having the following physical properties: a BET specific surface area of 5-8 mg 2 /g; an average particle size, d 50 , of 0.8-1.3 μm; a residual moisture content of 0.1-0.6%; oil absorption of 21-25%; water absorption of 0.6-0.8 mL/g. The method for producing a flame retardant includes mill drying a filter-moist aluminum hydroxide with an average diameter of 0.8-1.5 μm obtained by precipitation and filtration in a turbulent hot air stream until the BET surface area has increased by not less than 20% whilst largely maintain the particle size distribution.
