摘要: An end cap assembly for a primary lithium cell is disclosed. The end cap has a principal application in closing and sealing a primary lithium cell having wound electrodes. The cell may typically have an anode comprising lithium and a cathode comprising iron disulfide (FeS2). The end cap assembly has a metal cathode contact cup therein having a closed end and opposing open end with integral side walls therebetween. The cathode contact cup is electrically connected to the cathode and is within the electrical pathway between the cathode and terminal end cap. The cathode contact cup has one or more grooves formed at the closed end thereof resulting in thinned or rupturable portions of remaining metal underlying said grooves. The thin or rupturable remaining metal portions are exposed directly to gas within the cell interior and are designed to rupture when gas within the cell builds to a predetermined level.

摘要: A primary lithium cell having a wound electrode assembly. The electrode assembly comprises an anode comprising lithium, a cathode comprising a manganese dioxide and an electrolyte permeable separator therebetween. The electrode assembly comprises a cathode sheet, an anode sheet and electrolyte permeable separator sheet therebetween. The sheets are wound into a spiral roll. An exposed edge of each revolution of the separator sheet is then heat treated, for example, by applying a heated platen thereto to mold said exposed edge into a continuous separator membrane. The continuous separator membrane, so formed, covers and seals off said edge of adjacent revolutions of the cathode sheet and thus provides electrical insulation therefor. The electrode assembly can then be inserted into the cell casing so that the continuous separator membrane abuts a surface of the casing and provides electrical insulation between the casing and the wound cathode sheet. This reduces the total amount of electrical insulation needed between the cell casing and wound electrodes and thereby frees up void volume which can be used for additional active material, for example, by making the anode and cathode sheets wider.

摘要: An electrochemical cell and electrode assembly in which an alkali metal anode and a cathode assembly are wound together in a unidirectional winding having substantially straight sides such that the winding will fit into a prismatic cell. The anode and cathode are arranged in the winding to provide for even utilization of reactive material during cell discharge by placing cathode and anode material in close proximity throughout the electrode assembly in the proportions in which they are utilized. The winding also contributes to even utilization of reactive material by employing multiple tabs on the cathode assembly to ensure that cathode material is evenly utilized throughout the electrode assembly during cell discharge and also so that connections to the tabs are readily made.

摘要: A primary electrochemical cell having an anode comprising lithium and a cathode comprising iron disulfide (FeS2) and carbon particles. The cell is balanced so that the anode is in theoretical capacity excess (mAmp-hrs) compared to the theoretical capacity of the cathode. The anode and cathode can be spirally wound with separator therebetween and inserted into the cell casing with electrolyte then added. The electrolyte comprises a lithium salt dissolved in organic solvent.
