A continuous process for sulfonating elastomeric polymers to form neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymers with improved physical properties includes the steps of; (a) contacting a cement of an elastomeric polymer with a sulfonating agent in a staged reaction vessel for a sufficient period of time at a temperature of about -50.degree. C. to about +100.degree. C. to form an unneutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer; (b) continuously transferring the cement of the unneutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer to a neutralization vessel; (c) continuously adding a quenching agent and neutralizing agent to the cement of the unneutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer in a staged neutralization vessel wherein the sulfonated cement is quenched and the neutralization agent reacts with the unneutralized sulfonated polymer to form the neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer; and (d) isolating said neutralized sulfonated elastomeric polymer.

In a process for producing substantially gel free elastomers of isobutylene and a conjugated diene selected from the group consisting of cyclopentadiene, methylcyclopentadiene, isoprene or piperylene and mixtures thereof, improved products, higher catalyst efficiency, high cement concentrations and improved monomer conversions are obtained by the use of staged, or multiple reactors whereby the monomers and/or catalyst feeds may be divided among the reaction zones. The process provides elastomers which are substantially gel free having controlled molecular weight distribution (polydispersity) and high molecular weights at about 8 to about 45 mole % unsaturation.

In a process for producing elastomers of ethylene and C.sub.3 to C.sub.10 alpha-olefins, improved products, higher catalyst efficiency, improved monomer conversion and control of molecular weight distribution are obtained by the use of staged reactors wherein the monomer feed is divided between the reactors, the catalyst feed is added to the first reactor and the cocatalyst feed is divided with a different cocatalyst supplied to the second reactor. The process is applicable in either a divided single reactor or in the use of multiple reactors.

This invention relates to extrusion and injection moldable type elastomeric compositions having a viscosity at 200.degree. C. at 0.73 sec.sup.-1 of about 8.times.10.sup.4 to about 8.times.10.sup.6 poises. The compositions used for elastomeric articles include neutralized sulfonated co- and terpolymers of octene-1/ethylene/ENB or sulfonated terpolymers of hexene-1/ethylene/ENB, about 15 to about 200 parts by weight of a non-polar process oil per 100 parts of polymer; about 50 to about 300 parts by weight of a filler per 100 parts of polymer; and a preferential plasticizer at about 1 to about 50 parts by weight per 100 parts of the sulfonated elastomeric polymer. The composition may also include a crystalline polyolefinic thermoplastic at less then about 100 parts per hundred by weight.These blend compositions can be readily processed due to their superior rheological properties on conventional plastic fabrication equipment into elastomeric articles having excellent physical properties and desirable rubbery characteristics.

The present invention relates to improved catalyst compositions used in the formation of substantially gel-free copolymers and terpolymers of isobutylene and one or more dienes having an Mn of about less than 500,000, a mole % unsaturation of about 0.1 to about 45, and a polydispersity value of about 2.5 to about 30, wherein the mixture of isobutylene and diene monomers and a cosolvent are contacted with the catalyst composition at polymerization conditions (0.degree. C. to -100.degree. C.) wherein the improvement includes the hydrocarbon soluble catalyst composition being formed from the reaction product of a material of the formula:R.sub.m AlX.sub.3-mwherein m is an integer of from 1 to 3 inclusive, R is the same or different alkyl radical of straight or branched chain structure of from 1 to 7 carbons and X is the same or different halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine, and a halogen containing material which is Y moles of halogen, halogen acid, or mixed halogen per mole of aluminum compound wherein the halogen is selected from the group consisting of chlorine and bromine wherein the molar ratio of the formed catalyst composition to the monomer is critical by selecting at about 0.00001 to about 0.001 in order to obtain the desired elastomeric co- and terpolymers. The molar ratio of the halogen containing material to the R.sub.m Al.sub.3-m used in forming the catalyst is critically selected at about 0.014 to about 0.15. This improved catalyst composition permits the formation of high quality elastomeric products at improved polydispersity levels and higher monomer conversions wherein the catalyst composition is soluble in the inert solvent.
