    Abstract: An electronic device may include a display and an optical sensor formed underneath the display. The electronic device may include a plurality of transparent windows that overlap the optical sensor. Each transparent window may be devoid of thin-film transistors and other display components. The plurality of transparent windows is configured to increase the transmittance of light through the display to the sensor. The transparent windows may have non-periodic portions to mitigate diffraction artifacts in light that passes through the display to the optical sensor. The transparent windows may be shifted by a random amount in a random direction relative to a grid defining point and/or may be randomly rotated to increase the non-periodicity. A transparency gradient may be formed between the transparent windows and the surrounding opaque portion of the display. The transparent windows may be defined by non-linear edges.

    Abstract: A backlight unit may be used to produce backlight illumination for a display. The backlight unit may have a row of light-emitting diodes that are mounted on a flexible printed circuit and that emit light into a light guide layer. The backlight unit may include a chassis that extends around the periphery of the light guide layer. The chassis may have a first portion that is mounted on the flexible printed circuit adjacent to the light-emitting diodes and a second portion that extends over the light-emitting diodes. A heat spreading layer may be attached to a reflector layer and the flexible printed circuit. The heat spreading layer may have a width that is less than the width of the reflector layer. Adhesive patches may attach the light guide layer to the flexible printed circuit. A patterned adhesive layer may be formed over the light-emitting diodes and the light guide layer.

    Abstract: A display may have a backlight unit that provides backlight illumination. The backlight unit may include a light guide that distributes light throughout the display and an electrically adjustable lens array. The lens array may have lenses such as liquid lenses or liquid crystal lenses. By adjusting the lenses in the lens array, the angles of rays of backlight from the backlight unit may be adjusted to adjust the angle-of-view of the display. The angle-of-view of the display may also be adjusted using an electrically controllable filter layer. The electrically controllable filter layer may have a liquid crystal layer or a polymer dispersed liquid crystal layer that can be controlled using electrodes. When the electrodes apply signals to the electrically controllable filter layer, portions of the filter layer change to a dark or translucent state and restrict the angle-of-view of the display.

    Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a display mounted in a housing. The display may include a liquid crystal display module and a reflective polarizer having an in-plane optical axis. The display may also include a backlight unit that includes a light source, a light guide element, and a reflector film coupled to a backside of the light guide element. The display may also include a light retardation layer such as a quarter wave film. The quarter wave film may be arranged between the reflective polarizer and the reflector film of the backlight unit. Partially polarized light that is output from a front side of the light guide element may have a first component parallel to the in-plane optical axis and a second component perpendicular to the in-plane optical axis of the reflective polarizer. The second component may be reflected from the reflective polarizer.

    Abstract: An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry that controls the operation of the display. The display control circuitry may adaptively adjust the display output based on ambient lighting conditions. For example, in cooler ambient lighting conditions such as those dominated by daylight, the display may display neutral colors using a relatively cool white. When the display is operated in warmer ambient lighting conditions such as those dominated by indoor light sources, the display may display neutral colors using a relatively warm white. Adapting to the ambient lighting conditions may ensure that the user does not perceive color shifts on the display as the user's vision chromatically adapts to different ambient lighting conditions. Adaptively adjusting images in this way can also have beneficial effects on the human circadian rhythm by displaying warmer colors in the evening.

    Abstract: A display may have an array of pixels. The pixels may have color filter elements such as red, green, and blue color filter elements. A layer of opaque material may be used to form a black matrix. The black matrix may have openings that receive the color filter elements. A backlight unit may produce backlight illumination for the display. A reflector layer may be interposed between the black matrix and the backlight unit. The reflector layer may have openings aligned with the openings in the black matrix and the color filter elements and may overlap the black matrix. Some of the backlight from the backlight unit may pass through the color filter elements. Other backlight may by be recycled by being reflected off of the reflector layer, thereby enhancing backlight efficiency.
