Abstract: Techniques for implementing and/or operating an electronic device including a display pixel layer, which writes a display image during an active period and continues displaying the display image during a blanking period, and a touch sense layer, which generates a first touch image during the active period and a second touch image during the blanking period. The electronic device further includes a controller that determines a first noise metric indicative of display-to-touch noise resulting during the active period based on the first touch image, determines a second noise metric indicative of display-to-touch noise resulting during the blanking period based on the second touch image, and instructs the touch sense layer to not generate a third touch image during a subsequent active period in response to the first noise metric being greater than a noise threshold and the second noise metric not being greater than the noise threshold.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described herein to control brightness based on image content or other inputs to a display system. A dual-control system may integrate both slow control operations and fast control operations into a cohesive brightness management system. By using both shorter-term (e.g., fast control) and longer-term (e.g., slow control) brightness adjustment operations, the electronic device may quickly respond to high luminance and high brightness situations that may cause burn-in into the display, image artifacts, or other damage. Responding quickly to these high consumption situations may prevent damage or perceivable upset to an ongoing process, among other benefits.

Abstract: Systems and methods described herein may utilize a non-linear scaling relationship to scale brightness of selective portions of the display in a manner that reduces or eliminates perceivable banding effects. By non-linearly controlling changes in brightness of the display, a viewer may perceive a more uniform, linear dimming towards the relatively dimmer region without perceiving banding, leading to improved user experience when viewing the electronic display.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices are provided for providing intra-frame luminance scaling to avoid drawing excessive power while still providing exceptional brightness. An instantaneous average pixel luminance of an electronic display may be determined. The instantaneous average pixel luminance may correspond to an amount of light currently being emitted by the electronic display due to a previous image frame and a current image frame. Based at least in part on the instantaneous average pixel luminance, the luminance of a subset of pixels of image data of the current image frame may be adjusted, thereby allowing the electronic display to operate at a relatively high brightness level without exceeding a power limit.

Abstract: Aspects of the subject technology relate to electronic device display circuitry and methods of operating the display. The display circuitry includes gate-in-panel (GIP) drivers for each pixel row of a pixel array, and mode selection circuitry coupled between two of the GIP drivers. The mode selection circuitry receives a select signal to switch the display between a full-screen mode of operation and a split-screen mode of operation. The mode selection circuitry allows the pixel rows to be operated in a butterfly driving mode that facilitates reduction of optical artifacts when displaying augmented-reality or virtual-reality content with a multi-function display such as a display of a smartphone or a tablet.

Abstract: Display-to-touch noise may be perceptible when a touch image generated during an active period of an electronic display of an electronic device is used to determine a touch indication on the display. The electronic device may include a display pixel layer including a plurality of display pixels that write display images to the display during a display active period and continue displaying the display image during a display blanking period. The electronic device may also include a touch sense layer including a plurality of touch sense pixels that facilitate generation of a first touch image during a first display active period and generation of a second touch image during a first display blanking period. The electronic device may further include a controller coupled to the display pixel layer and the touch sense layer that facilitates the reduction or elimination of display-to-touch interference. In particular, the controller may determine a first noise metric associated with touch images generated during the first display active period and a second noise metric associated with touch images generated during the first display blanking period. Further, the controller may instruct the touch sense layer to not generate touch images during a second display active period in response to the first noise metric being greater than a noise threshold and the second noise metric not being greater than the noise threshold.

Abstract: A wireless power system may have a wireless power transmitting device and a wireless power receiving device. The wireless power receiving device may have a display that operates at a frame rate. The wireless power transmitting device may transmit wireless power signals to the wireless power receiving device at an initial frequency. In response to receiving the wireless power signals or in response to a request sent by the wireless power transmitting device, the wireless power receiving device transmits information on the frame rate to the wireless power transmitting device. The wireless power transmitting device uses the initial frequency and the frame rate in determining a safe frequency to use in transmitting wireless signals to avoid or at least reduce interference with the display. The wireless power transmitting device then adjusts the wireless power transmission frequency from the initial frequency to the safe frequency.

Abstract: This disclosure provide various techniques for tracking emission profiles on an electronic display. An emission profile may be applied to the electronic display in order to illuminate certain pixels and deactivate (e.g., turn off) certain pixels in the electronic display to facilitate refreshing (e.g., programming with new image data) the deactivated pixels. A real-time row-based average pixel level or average pixel luminance calculation architecture may track the one or more EM profiles to accurately model EM profile behavior, which may enable accurate calculation of the average pixel level or average pixel luminance of the electronic display at any one point in time. The accurate average pixel level or average pixel luminance calculations effectuated by the EM profile tracking may be used to reduce the IR drop, improve real-time peak-luminance control, and improve the performance of under-display sensors, among other advantages.
