摘要: A process is provided that allows the production of multi-layer coatings in which one or more topcoats can be applied to a porous basecoat to produce a uniform and defect-free coating layer. Specifically, a process is provided in which a liquid is applied to the basecoat prior to topcoating such that the air in the basecoat is removed prior to topcoating. This process can occur in-line with a simple apparatus described herein. An added benefit of this method is that it also allows the possibility of adding functionality or performing chemistry to a basecoat after the basecoat is dried and before the topcoat is applied in a single process. For example, the wetting fluid may contain, but is not limited to, surfactants, pH modifiers, polymers, crosslinkers, pigments, and/or dye stabilizers. Advantages over what has been done before include the use of re-wetting process that allows a topcoat to be applied to a porous basecoat that is coated on a non-porous substrate such that bubbles are not formed in the topcoat. In addition, there is added flexibility of incorporating functionality or chemistry in the re-wetting process. Finally, the process is simple to implement and is compatible with many general coating methods, such as slot-die coating, rod coating, blade coating, gravure coating, knife-over-roll coating, or the like.

摘要: The present invention is drawn to compositions and coated substrates wherein a hydrophobic backside coating layer can be implemented for use that mitigates ink transfer, surface damage, smudging, and sticking between stacked sheets in output trays of ink-jet ink printers. The backside coating can comprise hydrophobic beads suspended in a polymeric blend having a hydrophilic polymeric binder component and a hydrophobic polymeric binder component. Alternatively, the coating can comprise a hydrophobic binder blended with a natural wax. Either coating can be applied directly to the backside of a media substrate or on top of an existing hydrophilic layer that is typically applied for curl and sheet feed performance.

摘要: The present invention is drawn to compositions and coated substrates wherein a back coating layer can be implemented for use to mitigate ink transfer, surface damage, smudging, and sticking between stacked sheets in output trays of ink-jet ink printers. Specifically, a coated media sheet can comprise a printing surface including an ink-receiving coating formulated to accept an ink-jet ink composition, and an opposing back surface comprising a back coating. The back coating can include an admixture of 0.5 wt % to 75 wt % of a polymeric binder, 5 wt % to 95 wt % of filler particulates having an average particle size from about 0.01 μm to about 15 μm, and 3 wt % to 90 wt % of spacer particulates having an average particle size from about 6 μm to about 500 μm. In one embodiment, the spacer particulates are larger than the filler particulates.

摘要: Ink-receiving print media products having multiple capabilities including (A) minimal drying time; (B) improved smear-fastness; (C) the ability to generate high-definition images with desirable gloss characteristics and gloss-uniformity; and (D) excellent compatibility between the ink materials being delivered and the media products along with other related benefits including the control of ink-coalescence. The print media products of interest have at least one ink-receiving layer on a substrate (e.g. polyethylene-coated paper), with the ink-receiving layer including a poly(vinyl alcohol-ethylene oxide) copolymer as a special multi-functional ingredient designed to produce the foregoing benefits. The copolymer may be employed alone or combined with one or more other ingredients in the ink-receiving layer including pigment(s), supplemental binder(s), and the like in order to fabricate an effective media product ideally suited for inkjet image generation using a wide variety of inks.
