摘要: Process for simultaneous electrodeposition of at least a two component alloy system of cobalt and chromium on a substrate, by providing an aqueous solution of divalent cobalt and trivalent chromium ions and containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, at a pH of about 3 to about 5, electrolyzing the solution in an electrolyte cell containing an anode and a cathode, and codepositing cobalt and chromium on the cathode, e.g. titanium, as substrate. According to a preferred embodiment molybdenum-containing ions are also added to the electrolyte, resulting in codeposition of an alloy of cobalt, chromium and molybdenum. In another embodiment, a calcium phosphate ceramic such as hydroxyapatite (HA)is added to the above electrolyte solution, resulting, e.g. , in a codeposit of the calcium phosphate material, e.g. HA, and an alloy of cobalt, chromium and molybdenum. In still another embodiment, a calcium phosphate material such as HA, which has been previously attached to a substrate by sintering, is fixated by simultaneous electrodeposition of cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy, such codeposits having utility for improvement of medical implants.

摘要: A metal substrate, e.g. titanium, having a calcium phosphate coating, particularly hydroxylapatite, and containing a metal such as cobalt, codeposited on the substrate by electrolyzing a cobalt salt, particularly cobalt sulfate, liquid electrolyte having a calcium phosphate material, particularly hydroxylapatite, suspended therein, employing a cobalt anode and the metal substrate as cathode. The particles of cobalt so codeposited with the particles of calcium phosphate material, e.g. hydroxylapatite, hold the latter particles strongly on the substrate metal. If desired, a second coating of the pure calcium phosphate material, e.g. "hydroxylapatite", optionally can be applied over the codeposited hydroxylapatite-cobalt coating. The calcium phosphate coated metal substrate of the invention, particularly the codeposited "hydroxylapatite"-cobalt coating, on a titanium or cobalt-chromium substrate, has particular value for application as medical implants, e.g. as hip prosthetics, and for high temperature high stressed applications.

摘要: A cannula (10) receives surgical instruments (120) for performing a surgical procedure on a body (130). The cannula (10) comprises a tube structure (12) defining a passage (16) through which the surgical instruments (120) are inserted into the body (130). The tube structure (12) has a proximal end (20) and a distal end (62). The tube structure (12) includes an expandable portion (40) for enabling an increase in the cross-sectional area of the passage (16) at the distal end (62). The expandable portion (40) of the tube structure (12), when expanded, has a conical configuration.

摘要: An anterior spinal fixation device which provides an anterior lumbar and cervical fusion fixation system which has numerous advantages over existing anterior, posterior and lateral implant systems. Anterior (access from the patient's stomach region) lumbar surgery allows the surgeon to remove the entire intervertebral disc, which is not possible during posterior or lateral surgery. Many interbody fusion operations require removal of disc material, insertion of new graft material and fusion of the adjoining vertebrae. This pate and screw fixation invention provides the ability to perform this function. The novelty of this invention includes overall design allowing for multiple fusions, a bicortical fixation system which is achieved by inserting four screws at a 45 degree angle into two cortical surfaces. It also provides structural integrity by placing more friction on the screws which allows for increased pull out strength. An anterior fixation device also is further from the spinal cord which reduces the chance of contact with the new roots.
