The invention provides a lubricant composition for automatic transmissions excellent in sustainability of anti-shudder property, low-temperature viscosity characteristics, and oxidation stability, and excellent and well-balanced in durability of friction characteristics, energy-conserving performance, and anti-fatigue performance on gears. The composition contains a base oil having a kinematic viscosity at 100° C. of 3.7-4.1 mm2/s, and composed of base oil having the viscosity of 2.5-4.5 mm2/s, and base oil having the viscosity of 10-40 mm2/s; 1-20 mass % poly(meth)acrylate viscosity index improver having Mw of 15000-300.00; 2-4 mass % imide friction modifier having a C8-C30 hydrocarbon group; 0.01-0.04 mass % phosphorus extreme pressure agent in terms of phosphorus; and 0.01-0.04 mass % ashless dispersant having at least one alkyl or alkenyl group of a number average molecular weight of ≧2000 in terms of nitrogen, all with respect to the total amount of the composition, and has the viscosity of 5.6-5.8 mm2/s.

There is disclosed a traction drive fluid which comprises a base oil blended with (A) an active phosphate ester base compound, (B) a boron-containing imide base dispersant (e.g. polyalkenyl succinimide treated with a boron compound) and (C) a boron-free imide base dispersant (e.g. polyalkenyl succinimide) in such blending amounts that the phosphorus content derived from the component (A) and the boron content derived from the component (B) are each 100 to 600 ppm, preferably 60 to 300 ppm by weight, and at least 60 ppm by weight, respectively based on the base oil, and the boron-free imide base dispersant (C) is blended so that the ratio by weight of the nitrogen in the component(C) to the boron in the component (B) is at least 1, preferably 1 to 6. The traction drive fluid has excellent wear resistance and excellent scoring resistance of a steel material element, is capable of suppressing surface damage such as peeling of a friction material and in particular, is well suited for use as a lubricating oil for a traction drive continuous variable transmission used in an automobile.

A lubricating oil for flon compressor includes, as a main ingredient, a compound represented by a formula (I):R.sub.1 --[--O--(R.sub.2 O).sub.y --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.z --H].sub.x (I)in which R.sub.1 denotes a hydrocarbon residue derived from a C.sub.1-8 alcohol having a valence of 1 to 4, R.sub.2 denotes a C.sub.3-4 branched alkylene group, x denotes an integer of 1-4, and y and z each independently denote a positive number, R.sub.2 O units and CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O units are block copolymerized in an order shown in the formula (I), z/(y+z) is more than 0 but not more than 0.3. The lubricating oil has a kinetic viscosity of 2-30 cSt at 100.degree. C. A mixture of the oil having the formula (I) with a lubricating oil having a formula (II): R.sub.3 --[--O--(R.sub.4 O).sub.m --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --R.sub.5 ].sub.l may be also used. In the formula (II), R.sub.3 denotes a hydrocarbon residue derived from a CI-s alcohol having one to four hydroxyl groups, R.sub.4 denotes a C.sub.3-4 branched alkylene group, R.sub.5 denotes a C.sub.1-8 alkyl group, l denotes an integer of 1-4, m and n independently denote a positive number, R.sub.4 O units and CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O are block copolymerized, and n/(m+n) is more than 0 but not more than 0.5. A lubricating oil/refrigerant composition contains a minor part of such a lubricating oil and a major part of one or more kinds of flons and is highly useful in a process for lubricating a flon compressor.
