A disc storage system includes a rotating disc and a transducer. The transducer is carried on a slider which is supported by an armature. The armature is used to move the slider radially across the disc surface whereby information may be read from or written to the disc surface of the transducer. The slider includes an air bearing surface which faces the disc surface. As the disc rotates, the air bearing surface causes the slider to “fly” over the disc surface. Pads are provided on the air bearing surface to improve operational characteristics of the system and texturing is provided to a landing zone region on the disc surface.

The shear based transducer is used during the fabrication process to more precisely lap the MR element. The method comprises measuring the stripe height of the MR element and actuating the shear based transducer to move the MR element to a desired position relative to a lapping apparatus. The MR element is then lapped to achieve a desired stripe height.

Regardless of the approach used to deposit the fullerenes, the substrate can be heated during deposition to a temperature above the fullerene-to-fullerene disorption temperature to form a coating consisting of an approximate monolayer of fullerene.

A method is provided that decides whether a region of data storage units in a data storage system should be scanned for defective data. A current region of data storage units affected by a write operation is determined and which select transducing head of the data storage system that corresponds with the current region is also determined. A scalar value that corresponds with the select transducing head is retrieved. The scalar value related to a condition of the select transducing head based on previously conducted performance tests. An incremented write count of the affected region is scaled by the scalar value to obtain a new increment write count. A defective data scan is performed on the affected region if the new increment write count exceeds a default write count threshold.

The beam is directed at the multilayer coating to break the fullerene-to-fullerene intermolecular bond. In other embodiments, the monolayer of fullerene molecules is formed by applying a solvent to the multilayer coating to break the fullerene-to-fullerene intermolecular bond of the multilayer coating.

The data head also includes transducer overcoat protection which protects the transducer without increasing a spacing between the transducer and a surface of a data storage disc for a given fly height of the data head above the surface of the data storage disc.
