    摘要: A thin film magnetic head which can suppress magnetic saturation at opposite ends of width of a narrow track width to reduce the amount of recording side-fringing onto a recording medium and which can assure a necessary recording magnetic field satisfactorily. Also a magnetic disk apparatus using the head. A second magnetic yoke has a magnetic gap depth over which the spacing of a magnetic gap keeps substantially equal toward a rear portion of the second magnetic yoke, starting at the tip of a second magnetic pole and the spacing between a first magnetic yoke and the second magnetic yoke is increased toward the rear portion, starting at a position corresponding to the magnetic gap depth. The second magnetic pole of the second magnetic yoke has in the track width direction a width for recording a signal on a track width of the recording medium. The width keeps constant over a predetermined length toward the rear portion, starting at the second magnetic pole tip and spreads monotonically toward the rear, starting at a position corresponding to the predetermined length. The predetermined length terminating in the spread start position of the width of the second magnetic yoke is set to be shorter than the magnetic gap depth.

    摘要: A write head has a variable throat height wherein the throat height is dependent upon the frequency of operation of the write head. At high frequency operation the throat height is small and at low frequency operation the throat height is large. The write head writes hard into a circular track of a rotating magnetic disk at all frequencies but not overly hard at low frequencies thereby avoiding excessive erase bands and adjacent track interference (ATI) on each side of the track being written.

    摘要: A thin film magnetic head capable of obtaining a sufficient overwrite characteristic and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. An insulating film pattern is disposed in a recess formed in a bottom pole. The front end of the insulating film pattern is positioned within a region where the front end part of a top pole tip extends. The insulating film pattern has the function of shielding propagation of magnetic flux from the top pole tip disposed on the insulating film pattern to the bottom pole formed under the insulating film pattern. Consequently, due to the existence of the insulating film pattern, the propagation of the magnetic flux from the top pole tip to the bottom pole is suppressed, so that sufficient magnetic flux is supplied to the front end part. Therefore, the excellent overwrite characteristic can be assured.

    摘要: A first magnetic film to constitute a first yoke part and a first pole part is formed in a given pattern on a substrate, and a write gap film is formed on the part corresponding to the first pole portion of the first magnetic film. Then, a second magnetic film having a second pole portion and a second yoke part is formed on the write gap film by a photolithography so that the second pole portion can have a width of 1.5-2.5 &mgr;m. Thereafter, the sides of the second pole portion are etched by an ion beam etching method to narrow its width, and the write gap film is removed by using, as a mask, the second pole portion to expose the first magnetic film. Subsequently, the exposed first magnetic film is partially removed to form the first pole portion and thereby a thin film magnetic head having a pole portion with a track width of not more than 1 &mgr;m beyond the limit of the photolithography is produced.

The edges at the boundary between the leading region and the middle region are rounded.

    摘要: A thin film write head allowing substantially the same amplitude of input current to be used for writing both data transitions and equalization pulses onto a magnetic tape is described. Data transitions occur at a frequency no greater than a data frequency. Each equalization pulse is a signal written at an equalization frequency much greater than the data frequency. The thin film write head includes a top pole, a bottom pole, and a conductive coil between the top and bottom poles. The top pole, bottom pole, and conductive coil form an electromagnet for writing the write-equalized digital data stream onto the magnetic tape by converting an input current through the conductive coil into a head field. Conversion of the input current at the data frequency results in substantially the same head field amplitude as conversion of the input current at the equalization frequency. This may be achieved by increasing the gap depth to cause saturation at the data frequency.
