Abstract: A volumetric display may include a two-dimensional display; a varifocal optical system configured to receive image light from the two-dimensional display and focus the image light; and at least one processor configured to: control the two-dimensional display to cause a plurality of sub-frames associated with an image frame to be displayed by the display, wherein each sub-frame of the plurality of sub-frames includes a corresponding portion of image data associated with the image frame; and control the varifocal optical system to a corresponding focal state for each respective sub-frame.

Each of the first PBP lens and the second PBP lens includes a liquid crystal (“LC”) layer. Each side of the LC layer is provided with a continuous electrode and a plurality of patterned electrodes. The patterned electrodes in the first PBP lens are arranged non-parallel to the patterned electrodes in the second PBP lens.

Abstract: An optical element includes a first birefringent medium layer with orientations of directors of first optically anisotropic molecules spatially varying with a first in-plane pitch and a first vertical pitch. The optical element also includes a second birefringent medium layer with orientations of directors of second optically anisotropic molecules spatially varying with a second in-plane pitch and a second vertical pitch. The second birefringent medium layer is optically coupled with the first birefringent medium layer and configured to reduce a diffraction of a light by the first birefringent medium layer. The first in-plane pitch is substantially the same as the second in-plane pitch, and the second vertical pitch is smaller than the first vertical pitch.

Abstract: A system for measuring a satellite ghost efficiency of a diffractive lens is provided. The system includes a light source configured to output a first probing beam, and a beam tweaking assembly disposed between the light source and the diffractive lens, and configured to convert the first probing beam into a second probing beam that is a non-collimated beam. The diffractive lens diffracts the second probing beam into a plurality of diffracted beams including a first diffracted beam of a parent diffraction order and a second diffracted beam of a satellite ghost diffraction order. The beam tweaking assembly includes one or more optical lenses, and an adjustable optical power. The system also includes a detector configured to generate a beam spot pattern including a first beam spot corresponding to the first diffracted beam and a second beam spot corresponding to the second diffracted beam.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method may include (1) causing a radar component to emit one or more radar signals and (2) causing the radar component to analyze one or more return signals. Also disclosed is a method for forming a 3D liquid crystal polarization hologram optical element and a method for characterizing diffractive waveguides includes directing light onto a structure and measuring the diffracted light to capture at least one image of the structure. Lastly, disclosed is a method of pattering organic solid crystals and a method directing a beam of input light to a surface of an optical material to determine crystallographic and optical parameters of the optical material.
