THIS SPECIFICATION DISCLOSES ADDUCTS OF GAMMA-SUBSTITUTED-GAMMA-BUTYROLACTONES WITH O,O-DIALKYL-PHOSPHORODITHOIC ACIDS AND THEIR USE AS HERBICIDES AND AS LUBRICANT ADDITIVES FOR REDUCING THE WEAR OF SLIDING STEEL SURFACES.
Abstract:
A novel use for sorbents involving the selective removal of heavy metals from liquid streams has been discovered. More specifically it has been discovered that these sorbents selectively remove alkyl lead moieties from gasoline. The sorbents are comprised of metal halides (preferably tin tetrachloride or antimony pentachloride) bonded to a suitable substrate through at least one amine or alkyl halide functional group. The sorbents can be effectively regenerated.

THESE COMPOUNDS ARE SYNTHESIZED BY REACTING A SUBSTUTED $-LACTONE WITH AMMONIA OR A PRIMARY AMINE AT A TEMPERATURE FROM ABOUT 200*C TO ABOUT 500*C. OVER CERTAIN ZEOLITE CATALYSTS. ADDITIONALLY, $-BUTYROLACTONE CAN BE REACTED WITH AMMONIA OVER ZEOLITE CATALYSTS IN THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE RANGE TO PRODUCE $-BUTYROLACTAM.

A NOVEL CLASS OF BIODEGRADABLE DETERGENTS HAVING IMPROVED DISPERSION PROPERTIES IN HARD WATER ARE THE WATERSOLUBLE REACTION PRODUCTS OBTAINED BY REACTING A LACTONE WITH AN ALKANOLAMINE WITH AN ALLKYLENE OXIDE. MAINTAINHYDROXYALKANOLAMIDE WITH AN ALKYLENE OXIDE. MAINTAINING A PREFERRED RATIO OF THE NUMBER OF MOLES OF ALLKYLENE OXIDE REACTED WITH THE INTERMEDIATE AMIDE PRODUCT TO THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CARBON ATOMS IN THE LACTONE PRECURSOR WITHIN A SPECIFIC RANGE HAS BEEN FOUND TO PROVIDE PRODUCTS HAVING OPTIMUM DETERGENCY PROPERTIES. AMIDE PRODUCTS HAVING FROM 8 TO 30 CARBON ATOMS IN THE ACID PORTION AND CONTAINIING FROM ABOUT 1.5 TO ABOUT 20 TOTAL ETHYLENE OXIDE UNITS ARE MOST PREFERRED.
