ONE OF R" OR R"'' IS AN ALKYL OR AN ALKENYL GROUP, AND THE OTHER IS A CARBOXYALKYL, CARBOXYALKENYL, ESTERALKYL, OR ESTERALKENYL GROUP, THE SUM OF THE NUMBER OF CARBON ATOMS IN R" AND R"'' BEING AT LEAST 14. THESE LACTONES CAN BE EMPLOYED TO PRODUCE A LONG CHAIN DICARBOXYLIC ACID HAVING A GAMMA- OR BETAHYDROXY GROUP WHICH CAN BE USED IN FORMING ALKYD RESINS OR DETERGENTS. THE LACTONES ARE ALSO USEFUL AS LUBRICANTS FOR METAL PARTS.
