An optical device to be connected to an optical fiber and an optical system in which the optical fiber is fixed to the optical device are provided, which optical device and optical system can restrict variations in a distance between inclined surfaces for supporting the optical fiber, and can enhance a productivity of the optical device and system. The optical system according to the present invention is, for example an optical multiplexer/demultiplexer having an optical device according to the present invention, which device has a substrate (2) with a crystal axis, and a groove (10a) for supporting an optical fiber (6a). The groove (10a) has a pair of opposing inclined surfaces (24) for supporting the optical fiber (6a), and a recess (26) formed between the pair of opposing inclined surfaces (24).

A technique for evaluating a semiconductor chip is provided. The semiconductor chip is mounted on a mount substrate, the semiconductor chip laminating on one surface of a silicone substrate, at least any of a metal wiring film 101 serving as a resistance temperature detector made up of multiple regions and a metal wiring film 102 serving as a heater made up of one or more regions, and an electrode 103 for connecting the metal wiring film 101 and the metal wiring film 102 with the mount substrate. Then, the metal wiring film 101 is electrically connected with an ammeter and a voltmeter, and the metal wiring film 102 is electrically connected with a power source, thereby providing an evaluation system which is capable of evaluating temperature measurement, heating, and temperature profile in each of the regions on the semiconductor chip.

The present invention relates to a curved optical waveguide which is free of any axis-deviation structure in the middle of the waveguide and which has a sigmoidal core shape, wherein the curvature thereof at one end is zero and the curvature thereof at the other end is finite (>0) and the use of such a curved optical waveguide permits the reduction of optical loss at the connected portions to the lowest possible level even when it is applied to, for instance, an optical splitter or a directional coupler and the curved optical waveguide of the present invention can provide an optical waveguide which never requires the use of any offset.

A curved optical waveguide comprising a core and a clad, characterized in that: the core shape of the curved optical waveguide has no reversal of a curvature on a halfway; and curvatures at both ends of the curved optical waveguide gradually approach zero. A curved optical waveguide comprising a core and a clad, characterized in that: the core shape of the curved optical waveguide has no reversal of a curvature on a halfway; a curvature at one end of the curved optical waveguide gradually approaches zero; and a radius of curvature at other end is finite. An optical waveguide comprising such a curved optical waveguide and an optical waveguide having a different core shape optically connected with the former, and an optical device using such a curved optical waveguide.

An optical system comprising a substrate and an optical waveguide which is formed on the substrate and to which optical fibers are optically coupled. The optical waveguide has a plurality of straight core portions which obliquely intersect each other. The substrate has positioning sections for positioning a plurality of optical fibers optically coupled to two or more of the plurality of the core portions, the positioning sections having grooves on which the respective optical fibers are supported. When the plurality of optical fibers are supported on the respective grooves, offsets between centers of the plurality of the core portions and respective centers of the plurality of the optical fibers coupled to the core portions are equal to or less than 5 μm.

An optical waveguide structure (6) comprises a substrate (12) having a first groove array (8) and a second groove array (10) which are longitudinally spaced from each other, and an optical waveguide (14) layered on the substrate (12) between the first and second groove arrays (8, 10). Each groove array (8, 10) includes a plurality of grooves (8a-8g, 10a-10h) extending longitudinally and arranged laterally relative to each other. The optical waveguide (14) has a cladding layered on the substrate (14), and a core (14b) formed on the cladding so that, when optical fibers (2, 4) are supported and positioned on the grooves (8a-8g, 10a-10h) of the first and second groove arrays (8, 10), the core (14b) of the optical waveguide (14) is aligned with cores (2a, 4a) of the optical fibers (2, 4) at the same level in an vertical direction. In order to allow light transmission between optical fibers (2, 4) positioned at the respective first and second groove arrays (8, 10), the optical waveguide (14) has at least one first port (20) aligned with a groove (8d) of the first groove array (8), and at least one second port (22) aligned with a groove (10e) of the second groove array (10). The number of the second port (22) is equal to or greater than that of the first port (20). A ratio of the number of the grooves (10a-10h) of the second groove array (10) relative to the number of the grooves (8a-8g) of the first groove array (8) is less than a ratio of the number of the second ports (22) relative to the number of the first ports (20).
