The present invention relates to a peroxide curable rubber nanocomposite compound comprising a peroxide curative, a nanoclay and a high multiolefin halobutyl ionomer prepared by reacting a halogenated butyl polymer having a high mol percent of multiolefin with at least one nitrogen and/or phosphorus based nucleophile. The resulting high multiolefin halobutyl ionomer comprises from about 2 to 10 mol % multiolefin. The present invention is also directed to a shaped article comprising the rubber compound.

A process for producing high cis-1,4-polybutadienes wherein there is reduced gel formation is provided which process comprises: polymerizing 1,3-butadiene in a polymerization medium comprising an inert hydrocarbon solvent and water at a temperature of from about -30.degree. C. to about 60.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst system which is a mixture of (1) a substantially anhydrous divalent cobalt salt, (2) diethyl aluminum chloride or ethyl aluminum sesquichloride and (3) an organo aluminum compound of the formula R.sub.3 Al wherein R is an alkyl group having from 8 to 12 carbon atoms and, optionally triethylaluminum, the molar ratio of chloride in the diethyl aluminum chloride plus (3) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1 and the molar ratio of chloride in the ethyl aluminum sesquichloride plus (3) being from about 0.7:1 to about 1.4:1 and the ratio of the mols of the divalent cobalt salt to the total mols of diethyl aluminum chloride or ethyl aluminum sesquichloride plus (3) being from about 1:15 to about 1:30, the water being employed at a level of from about 0.1 to about 0.8 millimol for every millimol of diethyl aluminum chloride or ethyl aluminum sesquichloride used, to the desired conversion.

A polymerization process for preparing a silica-filled butyl rubber polymer. A quaternary onium ion substituted silaceous nanoclay is dispersed in the organic polymerization fluid prior to polymerization of an isoolefin monomer and a multiolefin monomer in the fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymer comprises butyl rubber intercalated with silica from the silaceous nanoclay. The rate of polymerization is substantially unaffected by addition of the nanoclay to the polymerization fluid. The resulting silica-filled polymers exhibit improved impermeability as compared with non-filled polymers.

The invention further relates to the polymers which can be produced according to the present invention and to the use thereof for the production of moldings of all types, particularly tires and industrial rubber products, and for blending with polystyrene (HIPS).

A polymerization process is provided for producing a terminally functional polymer which comprises introducing a monomer charge, a Lewis acid and an organic peroxy compound into a suitable reaction vessel and polymerizing the monomer charge at a temperature of from about 0.degree. to about -80.degree. C. to form the terminally functional polymer, wherein the monomer charge comprises isobutylene and the organic peroxy compound is charge in an amount of from about 10.sup.-4 to about 10.sup.-1 moles per mole of the isobutylene. In a preferred embodiment, the monomer charge additionally comprises vinylidene aromatic or diolefin monomers. The invention also provides a novel catalyst system comprising an organic peroxy compound and a Lewis acid for the polymerization of isobutylene or monomer mixtures containing isobutylene.

An adhesive polymer comprising a maleic anhydride grafted butyl rubber and a polymer compound made from the adhesive polymer further comprising a functionalized siliceous nanoclay. The adhesive polymer and polymer compound exhibit greatly improved adhesion to certain substrate surfaces. Examples of substrate materials include stainless steel, glass, mylar or Teflon®. The greatest adhesion was observed in polymer compounds comprising maleic anhydride grafted butyl rubber produced according to a solution process and from 5 to 15 phr of a montmorillonite nanoclay. The adhesion is improved with increasing levels of nanoclay content in the compound up to a limit where filler-filler interactions occur.

The present invention also relates to a sealing material and a medical device containing at least one peroxide-curable compound containing a butyl-like polymer containing less than 15 wt. % of solid matter insoluble in boiling cyclohexane under reflux for 60 min. Further, the present invention relates to a process for producing a butyl-like polymer having no conjugated aliphatic diene in its composition and containing less than 15 wt. % of solid matter insoluble in boiling cyclohexane under reflux for 60 min. In addition, the present invention relates to a process the manufacturing of the inventive compound wherein the elastomeric polymer is mixed with at least one filler and at least one peroxide curing system in a mixing means.
