Abstract:
A lubricating grease composition is manufactured by preparing an aqueous suspension containing a clay and a water-insoluble dye in a weight ratio between 1:10 and 10:1, adding a lubricating oil to the suspension, substantially dehydrating the mixture and shearing the dehydrated product. The waterinsoluble dye employed is an indanthrene compound, an indogen compound, a phthalocyanine, an N - acyl derivative of 9,10-dihydroxyl-1,4-diamino-anthracene, an N-acyl derivative of 9,10-dihydroxy - 1,2 - diamino-anthracene or an N-acyl derivative of diamino-anthraquinone. The lubricating oil may be mineral or synthetic, examples of synthetic oils being alkyl esters of mono- or dicarboxylic esters, polyglycols or their esters or ethers, complex esters, phosphate or sulphite esters (including those derived from the monomethyl ether of ethylene glycol), carbonate esters, halocarbon oils, silicones (including chlorophenyl silicones), mercaptals and formals. Indanthrene compounds mentioned are flavanthrone, indanthrone, pyranthrone, violanthrone, and di- or tri-chloroindanthrone. The indogen compounds may carry substituents such as hydroxy, carboxy or nitro groups or halogen atoms, specific compounds being indigo, iso-indigo, 3 - keto - indoline, isatide and isatin. The phthalocyanines include not only metal-free phthalocyanine but also metal phthalocyanines, chlorinated phthalocyanine and chlorinated metal phthalocyanines. The clay employed, e.g. bentonite or bectorite, may be modified by treating the aqueous clay slurry with a phosphorus acid (especially phosphoric acid) to increase the waterresistant properties of the grease. The mixture of grease ingredients may be dehydrated by distillation (especially in the presence of an azeotroping agent, e.g. an alcohol, ketone or ester) or by solvent replacement with a watermiscible liquid (e.g. acetone or isopropyl alcohol). In the examples, grease compositions are prepared from (1) hectorite, phosphoric acid, indanthrone and methyl phenyl silicone oil, (2) hectorite, phosphoric acid, indigo and bright stock or (3) bentonite, phosphoric acid, copper phthalocyanine and methyl phenyl silicone oil.
