Abstract: An exhaust mixing device for mixing an exhaust produced by an engine with a reagent exhaust treatment fluid that is dosed into the exhaust from a dosing module. The exhaust mixing device includes a decomposition tube having a first end and a second end. The first end of the decomposition tube is configured to receive the exhaust and the reagent exhaust treatment fluid. A flow reversing device is positioned at the second end of the decomposition tube. The flow reversing device includes a plurality of deflecting members that intermix the exhaust and reagent exhaust treatment fluid, and direct the exhaust and reagent exhaust treatment fluid in predetermined directions, wherein the flow reversing device reverses a flow direction of the exhaust back towards the first end of the decomposition tube.

Abstract: A mixer assembly for an exhaust aftertreatment system includes a first support ring. The first support ring defines a plurality of first slots angularly spaced apart from each other. A second support ring spaced apart from the first support ring defines a plurality of second slots angularly spaced apart from each other. A plurality of blades extends between the first support ring and the second support ring. Each of the plurality of blades is coupled to each of the first support ring and the second support ring. Each of the plurality of blades includes a base. The base includes a first connecting portion engaged with a corresponding first slot from the plurality of first slots and a second connecting portion engaged with a corresponding second slot from the plurality of second slots. At least one tab extends outwardly from the base at an angle relative to the base.

A tubular swirling device housing extends along a first axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal axis. The tubular swirling device includes a plurality of openings through which exhaust gas enters. The exhaust gas within the tubular swirling device swirls about the first axis and exits at an outlet end of the tubular swirling device. A mixing plate is positioned immediately downstream of the tubular swirling device. The mixing plate swirls the exhaust about a second axis extending parallel to the longitudinal axis.

Abstract: An exhaust system assembly including a catalyst housing, a catalyst core, and a swirler tube positioned inside the catalyst housing. The swirler tube has a plurality of openings that permit radial exhaust flow into an inner volume of the swirler tube from the catalyst housing. One end of the swirler tube has blades that extend inward and include oblique surfaces arranged at oblique angles relative to a centerline axis of the swirler tube. These blades induce a vortex in the exhaust gases exiting the first swirler tube end. The swirler tube is arranged inside the catalyst housing such that a sequential flow path is created where the exhaust gases flowing through the catalyst housing must first pass through the openings in the swirler tube and then by the blades at the first swirler tube end.

Abstract: An exhaust aftertreatment system may include a housing, an aftertreatment device, and a cantilevered flow distributing element. The housing receives exhaust gas output from an engine and has a main body and an exhaust gas inlet that is angled relative to the main body. The flow distributing element is disposed within the housing upstream of the exhaust aftertreatment device and includes a baffle plate and a collar. The baffle plate is attached to an inner wall of the main body. The collar may include a plurality of first apertures, a downstream axial edge and an upstream axial edge. A portion of the downstream axial edge may abut an upstream-facing surface of the baffle plate. The baffle plate may have a plurality of second apertures extending through the upstream-facing surface. The collar may extend across and partially block at least some of the second apertures.

Abstract: An exhaust aftertreatment system may include an exhaust gas passageway and a mixer assembly. The exhaust gas passageway may receive exhaust gas output from a combustion engine. The mixer assembly may be disposed along the exhaust gas passageway and may receive the exhaust gas. The mixer assembly may include a mixer housing, a mixing bowl and an injector housing. The mixing bowl may be disposed within the mixer housing and may include an outer diametrical surface that engages an inner diametrical surface of a wall of the mixer housing. The injector housing may extend through the wall and into an aperture in the mixing bowl. The aperture may define a flow path through which at least a majority of the exhaust gas entering the mixer assembly flows. The mixing bowl may include an upstream end portion having contours directing the exhaust gas toward the injector housing.
