摘要: A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display element comprising a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal composition injected into and cured in an evacuated cell constituted with the substrates, wherein the degree of vacuum in the cell is from 0.5 to 10 mmHg, the composition forms a liquid crystal and polymer composite in which the nematic liquid crystal is dispersed and held in the resin matrix, and light transparent-scattering states are attained by agreement and disagreement between the refraction index of the liquid crystal and the refractive index of the resin matrix under control of an electric field applied across the electrodes. Residual bubbles left in the cell are disposed in the peripheral portion not constituting the display portion or in the pocket portion formed integrally to the peripheral portion.

摘要: A polarizing diffraction element having a wavelength selectivity which functions as a polarizing diffraction element at a wavelength λ1, and which does not function as a diffraction grating not depending on incident polarization state and shows high transmittance at a wavelength λ2, and an optical head device employing the element, are provided. The polarizing diffraction element selectively diffracts or transmits incident light having two different wavelengths each containing a first circularly polarized light and a second circularly polarized light having a rotation opposite from the rotation of the first circularly polarized light, depending on wavelength and polarization state of the incident light. Then, a reflective wavelength region for at least the first circularly incident light, does not contain said two incident wavelengths.

摘要: An acid diffusion-dialysis membrane, which can be used for separating an acid from a mixture of an acid and a salt, or a mixture of an acid and a water-soluble organic compound, e.g., glucose, by non-electrolytic dialysis, is prepared by forming a film from the combination of (I) a vinyl group containing benzene monomer or a vinyl group containing pyridine monomer, (II) a non-conjugated divinyl-containing monomer, and (III) a thermoplastic polymer which is swellable or soluble in the monomer mixture, polymerizing said monomer mixture in the film, and then introducing anion exchange groups into the resulting polymerized product. The acid diffusion-dialysis membrane is characterized by a high acid diffusion-dialysis coefficient and a high acid-salt selectivity ratio, and further by a relatively high mechanical strength.

摘要: As an optically anisotropic diffraction grating in an optical head for reading and/or writing of an optically recording medium, optically anisotropic diffraction grating which comprises an optically anisotropic polymer liquid crystal sandwiched between two transparent substrates are used. The optically anisotropic polymer liquid crystal can have an alignment direction periodically changed to form a grating of different refractive indices, obtaining a high-utilization efficiency by light ray and a high degree of reliability.
