An acid diffusion-dialysis membrane, which can be used for separating an acid from a mixture of an acid and a salt, or a mixture of an acid and a water-soluble organic compound, e.g., glucose, by non-electrolytic dialysis, is prepared by forming a film from the combination of (I) a vinyl group containing benzene monomer or a vinyl group containing pyridine monomer, (II) a non-conjugated divinyl-containing monomer, and (III) a thermoplastic polymer which is swellable or soluble in the monomer mixture, polymerizing said monomer mixture in the film, and then introducing anion exchange groups into the resulting polymerized product. The acid diffusion-dialysis membrane is characterized by a high acid diffusion-dialysis coefficient and a high acid-salt selectivity ratio, and further by a relatively high mechanical strength.

A method and system combining filtration and ion-exchange structures for removing contaminants from liquids. In overall concept, contaminated liquid is passed through filtering mediums to remove particulate matter from the incoming contaminated liquid. Organics are removed from the liquid by passage through adsorbent non-ionic type resins. The liquid is then passed through strong acid cation exchange resins, weak base anion exchange resins, weak acid cation exchange resins, and strong base anion exchange resins arranged in a predetermined location in the liquid flow path to provide optimized contaminant removal. One of the optimization techniques is through the pH adjustment of the liquid at predetermined points in the flow path. Additionally, the liquid to be purified is passed through mixed bed polisher resins as well as chelation resins to provide a final substantially contaminant free liquid which is returned to use in a closed loop fashion.

A solid, particulate reactant is continuously added to a first zone and a liquid reactant is continuously added to a second zone. A conduit between the zones allows the solid and liquid reactants to pass counter-currently between the zones, the reaction being accomplished on contact between the reactants. During steady state operation, a clear layer is established in each zone above a slurry layer of the particles in solution. The clear layer is withdrawn from the top of each zone and introduced at the bottom thereof causing agitation in the slurry layer which promotes the reaction. The solid reactant is withdrawn from the second zone while the spent liquid reactant is withdrawn from the first zone.

A method for the recycle treatment of chromium plating waste water, in the process of treating chromium plating waste water obtained by washing the chromium plated products with ion exchange resins, wherein, for the purposes of improving the rate of recovery of chromic acid, of extending the life of the ion exchange resins, and of preventing the formation of sludge, the chromium plating waste water is adjusted almost to neutrality by the addition of an alkaline substance so as to precipitate the metal components contained therein in the form of hydroxides, which are then removed by filtration; the filtrate so obtained is kept neutral during the subsequent treatment for the removal of alkaline components by adsorption in a pretreatment tower packed with cation exchange resins; the dilute dichromic acid solution so obtained is similarly treated for concentration in an adsorption tower packed with anion exchange resins and a purification tower packed with cation exchange resins so as to recover pure dichromic acid solution, whereas the above pretreatment tower and purification tower are regenerated by treatment with sulfuric acid.
