An information verifying apparatus for verifying information recorded on a recording medium. One unit of information input is recorded on a storage medium and is retrieved from the storage medium. A buffer memory stores the one unit of information input, the one unit of information stored in the buffer memory being the same as the one unit of information recorded on the storage medium. An output controller outputs the retrieved information and controls the timing of output of the retrieved information. A comparator compares the information from the buffer memory with the information from the output controller. Since the information is verified using a buffer memory and on output controller, verification can be quickly performed without the use of a large quantity of memory.

The present invention realizes to increase a recording density in an optical information recording medium. The recording medium on which multi-value digital information is recorded includes a mark for forming an identification signal for identifying values of the multi-value digital signal from a reproduction signal obtained upon reproduction of the information recorded in the recording medium. An optically information recording/reproducing method according to the present invention has an information recording step and an information reproducing step. In the information recording step, a reference mark and multi-value digital information are recorded on the recording medium. The reference mark is to form an identification signal used for identifying values of the multi-value digital information from a reproduction signal optically detected from the recording medium. In the information reproducing step, the identification signal is formed from the reference mark and the values of the multi-value digital information is identified from the reproduction signal by the use of the identification signal, and thereby the multi-value digital information is reproduced.

An information recording-reproducing method is disclosed. An error correction code of M bytes and N bytes is imparted in a vertical direction and a horizontal direction, respectively, to data of m.times.n bytes. A signal of (m+M).times.(n+N) bytes (m, n, M and N being one or an integer greater than one) is produced. The signal to which the error correction code has been imparted is written-in to a recording medium. The written-in signal is read out from the recording medium. Error correction on the read-out signal is effected in only one of the vertical direction and the horizontal direction by the use of the error correction code included in the signal. A determination is made of the occurrence of abnormality in the writing-in when all the errors in the signal cannot be corrected by the error correction in the one direction. The signal for which has been determined that no abnormality exists in the writing-in is re-read out from the recording medium and error correction on the re-read-out signal in the vertical direction and the horizontal direction is effected by the use of the error correction code included in the signal. Data is thereby reproduced.
