摘要: A respiration unit for supplying a preselected limited volume of breathing gas to a patient at limited positive pressures, and at a preselected limited flow rate is disclosed. The system includes an air delivery cylinder having a drive weight which is free to move up and down. A diaphragm connected to the weight divides the cylinder into an upper control chamber and a lower delivery chamber. A vacuum source is connected to the control chamber through a first solenoid-controlled valve to regulate the lifting of the weight, and a second solenoid-controlled valve regulates the bleeding of air into the control chamber to release and regulate the rate of fall of the weight, thereby driving breathing gas under pressure out of the lower chamber. A control system regulates the lift and lower cycles of the drive weight to provide the required operation of the system, with various sensors being provided to allow patient control of the system under selected conditions, and to assure patient safety. The control system incorporates, among other things, means for providing a variable inspiratory-expiratory ratio, for permitting patient assisted breathing, for mixing oxygen with air or anesthetic gases, for periodically altering the breathing pattern, for permitting selection of positive or negative end expiratory pressure, for allowing selection of the breathing waveform, and for providing accurate displays of essential parameters.

摘要: A substantially completely water-soluble and pepsin-digestible protein is obtained by the hydrolysis of the keratin contained in animal structures with saturated steam at a pressure of from about 50 to about 250 p.s.i.g. or higher and from about 5 to about 30 parts of liquid water per part of the keratin source, by weight, at the temperature of saturated steam at the pressure employed. Conversion of the keratin to soluble protein and meal is about 80%; the yield of water-soluble protein being as high as about 70%. The water-soluble protein is an excellent animal food.

摘要: A method and related apparatus for separating carbon dioxide snow from a mixture of carbon dioxide snow and vapor is disclosed. A mixture of carbon dioxide snow and vapor is introduced into a rectangular conduit which has an inlet end, an outlet end, a discharge orifice and continuously increasing cross-section from said inlet end to said discharge orifice. At least a portion of the conduit between the inlet end and the discharge orifice is curved to define a flow path for the mixture such that carbon dioxide snow tends to be concentrated for flow in a concentrated stream through said path. Means for deflecting a portion of the mixture after it passes through said discharge orifice is also provided.

摘要: A humidifier system for delivering breathing gases such as air or oxygen from a respirator, anesthesia machine, oxygen source, or the like to a patient under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity is disclosed. The humidifier comprises a support housing adapted to receive a removable water tank, the housing also containing a low water sensing system, a water heating means, and a system for sensing and for regulating the temperature of the water in the tank. The tank includes an air inlet leading to a diffuser chamber, from which air flows through a diffuser plate, through the water to the humidifier, and thence to an outlet for delivery to the patient. The diffuser plate incorporates a plurality of cone-shaped apertures which create air turbulence in the water so that as the breathing gases are forced through the water tank under positive pressure, the gases are uniformly heated and humidified prior to delivery.

摘要: The organic pollutants in a waste water stream can be reduced 90-95% by providing oxygen to sludge organisms for biological oxygenation of the pollutants. The raw waste water and activated organisms (sludge containing little or no pollutants) are mixed in a vessel for less than 30 minutes. In this vessel, the organisms absorb and adsorb 90-95% of the organic pollutants present in the influent raw waste water. Any means for gentle agitation can be used in this vessel. The waste-enriched organisms are separated from the supernatant liquid in a clarifier and sent to an oxygenation vessel where the organisms metabolize the waste by treatment with an oxygen-containing gas having at least 30% by volume oxygen. The thus-activated organisms are returned to the mixed liquor vessel to complete the cycle.

摘要: An adjusting and tuning arrangement is provided in a microwave oven to adjust the energy distribution to various areas of the oven cavity such as defined areas or the area of a sensor assembly on a tray inserted in the oven and also to balance the distribution of energy between the load articles on the tray and the sensor assembly or between various load articles. Two electrically conductive planar elements are positioned inside and project into the cavity to accomplish the tuning. The planar elements are arranged one above the other at predetermined angular orientations and are also each independently rotatable about one edge.
