The invention relates to chromogenic naphtholactams of the general formula ##STR1## wherein Q is the radical of a couplable compound,X is oxygen or ##STR2## wherein R is hydrogen, lower alkyl or aryl, and W is alkylene, cycloalkylene or a 6-membered isocyclic or heterocyclic aromatic radical which is unsubstituted or substituted or which may contain a fused benzene ring; and each of the ringsA and B independently of the other are unsubstituted or substituted.These compounds are particularly suitable for use as color formers in pressure-sensitive or heat-sensitive recording materials and, depending on the meaning of X and Q, give orange, red, violet and blue colorations.

There is described a novel process for producing 1,8-naphtholactam compounds of the formula I ##STR1## wherein the symbols R, A and B have the meanings defined in claim 1. This process comprises reacting a 1,8-naphtholactone compound of the formula II ##STR2## in an aqueous medium, with an amine of the formula IIINH.sub.2 --R (III),optionally in the presence of bisulfite. The naphtholactam compounds of the formula I are obtained with a high degree of purity and with a yield of over 90%.

Naphthostyril is obtained in high space/time yields by reacting 1-naphthyl isocyanate with an anhydrous aluminium halide in an inert solvent, carrying out the reaction in a homogeneous solution using 700-1.800 ml of solvent per mol of 1-naphthyl isocyanate in the temperature range from 140.degree.-160.degree. C. and -- after hydrolysis of the reaction mixture -- separating the phases. Naphthostyril is an intermediate for preparation of dyestuffs.
