Abstract: A transformable wheel includes a wheel frame including a plurality of contact portions and a plurality of recessed portions. A plurality of transforming members is provided wherein one side of each transforming member is rotatably coupled to a corresponding one of the recessed portions and an outer surface of each transforming member forming a portion of the wheel frame. A rotating member is provided at one side surface of the wheel frame, and includes a plurality of transformation locking members arranged radially from the central axis of the wheel frame to correspond to the plurality of transforming members, respectively. A driving member is configured to rotate the rotating members by a preset angle about the central axis of the wheel frame.

Abstract: Concepts of an omnidirectional pinion wheel are described. In one embodiment, the wheel includes first and second rims each including inner and outer rim surfaces, and an annular ring of rollers affixed on the outer surface of one of the first and second annular rim. Using an axis of freedom of the rollers, the wheel can move sideways in addition to forward and backward. Further, when used with a vertical rack gear, the wheel can provide vertical displacement by engagement between teeth of the gear and the pinion ring. Additionally, various racks and tracks with teeth for pinion ring engagement are described along with an example vehicle capable of vertical displacement using the wheels.

Abstract: In the operation of a construction machine over terrain strewn with debris, there is a tendency for the debris to work itself into areas of sealing interface such as between an axle and the final drive assemblies of the machine. When this occurs the seals and possible the life of the drive components can be greatly reduced. The present invention comprehends a guard assembly that has a bracket member that is positioned on an axle adjacent a cylindrical hub defined by the wheels. The guard assembly utilizes a plurality of plates positioned within, above and laterally spaced from the hub of an adjacent wheel to prevent the ingress of foreign material into the hub. The hub and the sealed interfaces and other components housed therein are thereby protected from possible damage as a result of contact with the foreign material.

Abstract: A section of a train wheel tread is formed into a continuous hyperbolic curve to respond asymptotically to changes in the path of a rail, thus, dampening lateral oscillation of the train wheels back and forth across rail. The hyperbolic curve at a minimum extends from a taping line to a wheel lift point. However, for further dampening effects the hyperbolic curve is extended from a fillet section across the taping line toward the field side of the wheel. Two tires having the same hyperbolic profile work in conjunction as a feedback system to dampen lateral oscillation while at the same time saving energy, reducing tire and rail wear.

Abstract: A convertible ducted fan engine and mounting system. The convertible ducted fan engine has a shroud encircling a mechanical fan. The convertible ducted fan engine includes a fluid-propulsion configuration in which the mechanical fan rotates freely with respect to the shroud to produce thrust through fluid flow, and a drive-wheel configuration in which the shroud rotates about the rotational axis.
