In a preferred embodiment, the silicon dioxide layer is recessed away from an Air Bearing Surface (ABS) to reduce protrusion of a P2 layer and the P3 layer in the head, and to reduce degradation in the magnetic properties of the pole tips of the P2 and P3 layer ends.

A magnetic head having improved overwrite capabilities and reduced fringing fields are described along with methods of making the same. The magnetic head has a first pole piece and a second pole piece. The first pole piece includes a first bottom pole piece layer, a pedestal portion formed over the first bottom pole piece layer, and a notched top pole portion formed over the pedestal portion. A gap layer separates the second pole piece from the notched top pole portion. The pedestal portion has a first saturation magnetization MS1 and the top pole portion has a second saturation magnetization MS2 that is greater than the first saturation magnetization MS1. The top pole portion has a substantially planar top surface over which a portion of the gap layer and the second pole piece are formed.

A magnetic head has highly thermally conductive insulator materials containing cobalt-oxide so that heat can more effectively dissipate from the magnetic head. In one illustrative example, the magnetic head has first and second gap layers and a read sensor disposed between the first and the second gap layers. The first and the second gap layers are advantageously made of cobalt-oxide (CoOx) (e.g. CoO or Co2O3), which may exhibit a thermal conductivity of between 5-8 watts/meter-Kelvin or greater. In another illustrative example, a magnetic head is made of a substrate; first and second shield layers; an undercoat layer formed between the substrate and the first shield layer; first and second gap layers formed between the first and the second shield layers; and a read sensor formed between the first and the second gap layers. The undercoat layer is also made of CoOx. The improved dissipation of heat from the magnetic head improves the read sensor performance and reduces the likelihood of other problems, such as head-to-disk interface problems.

A write head has a variable throat height wherein the throat height is dependent upon the frequency of operation of the write head. At high frequency operation the throat height is small and at low frequency operation the throat height is large. The write head writes hard into a circular track of a rotating magnetic disk at all frequencies but not overly hard at low frequencies thereby avoiding excessive erase bands and adjacent track interference (ATI) on each side of the track being written.

A rotary plater and method of plating are provided which improve the uniformity of plating across a plating surface of a workpiece. A plating solution distribution device is located in a plating cup between an anode and a cathode in a spaced relationship therebetween and is centered about a vertical axis of the plating cup. A motor is provided for relatively rotating the cathode and the plating solution distribution device with respect to one another. The plating solution distribution device distributes the plating solution over the plating surface at a distribution rate which increases radially outwardly from the vertical axis. With this arrangement the volume of plating solution at the outer periphery of the plating surface is enriched with ions to promote plating uniformity.
