The present invention resides in a method of manufacturing a bearing ring (101) for a rolling element bearing, wherein the bearing ring comprises a bearing race (102) made of a bearing grade steel and an overmoulded part (106) that is preferably made of a lightweight metal such as aluminium or a thermoplastic material such as polyamide. According to the invention, the method comprises a step of hardening at least a raceway surface (103) of the bearing race prior to a step of joining the overmoulded part (106) to the bearing race (102) in a moulding process. In a further development, the method comprises a step of temperature control, to ensure that the temperature of the raceway surface (103) is kept below a predetermined value during the moulding process.

A method for producing a ductile cast iron product, wherein the cast iron product contains sulfur in an amount of 0.009 to 0.015 wt % and magnesium in an amount of 0.035 to 0.050 wt %, and wherein a dried sand is used for a mold. The method can be suitably employed for producing, at a low cost, a ductile cast iron product which is not chilled and has a ferritic structure, and thus is soft and exhibits great ductility even when it is a thin product. The present invention has been completed based on the finding that the combination of the increase in a certain degree of the content of sulfur, which has been considered to be a substance interfering with the formation of spherical graphite, with the lowering of the rate of cooling allows the production of a ductile cast iron product which is not chilled and has a ferritic structure, and thus is soft and exhibits great ductility even when it is a thin product.

The above mixtures have a good granulometric stability over time and provide an efficient inoculation of cast pieces, in particular of thin pieces.

A method and apparatus is provided for producing a porous metal. The method broadly includes the steps of first, providing a molten metal and second, introducing a gas into said molten metal. The method then includes spray casting the molten metal containing the gas onto a surface thereby producing the porous metal. The method further provides for controlling the amount and size of the porosity contained within the porous metal by controlling the parameters at which the gas is introduced into the molten metal, as well as, controlling the parameters surrounding the spray casting of the molten metal. Additionally, the method also provides for producing a porous metal having either an isolated or interconnected pore structure. The present invention also provides for a porous metal product, as well as a porous aluminum alloy product, made by the described method. The apparatus includes a means for containing the molten metal wherein the containing means has a discharge end. A means for introducing a gas into the containing means is also provided. The apparatus further includes molten metal discharge means positioned adjacent the discharge end of the containing means for atomizing the molten metal that is discharged from the discharge end into metal droplets, and a substrate on which the metal droplets are deposited in order to form the porous metal.
