A strain gauge arrangement for die casing machines of the type having tie bars with threaded ends, comprises an unthreaded, uniform intermediate portion on at least one of the tie bars, which defines a measuring region with interior and exterior ends. An elongate aperture extends through the end of the one tie bar, and terminates at a base that defines the interior end of the measuring region. A detector rod is telescopingly received in the aperture, and has its inner end resiliently urged into continuous contact with the base of the aperture. A sleeve is slidingly received over the outer end of the detector rod, and has its inner end resiliently urged into continuous contact with a shoulder which defines the exterior end of the measuring region. A measuring device detects changes in the relative position of the outer ends of the detector rod and the sleeve to determine strain in the measuring region of the one tie bar.

A movable mold part plate is connected to the fixed backing plate through a drive and locking mechanism which is capable of moving the movable mold part plate into a mold position with the fixed mold part plate. A thermal force control apparatus is associated with one or more of the tie rods for changing the temperature of the tie rods and thereby causing the tie rods either to expand or contract. Apparatus is disclosed for indicating the final tonnage produced by a press having a toggle mechanism actuated by a closing means. The apparatus comprises means for measuring the closing force exerted on the toggle mechanism by the closing means, means for detecting the initial peak closing force measured by the measuring means, means for converting the initial peak closing force to a final press tonnage value preferably using a proportional relationship, and means for outputting the final press tonnage value. In addition, the apparatus may include switch means for disconnecting the measuring means from the detecting means after the detecting means has detected the initial peak closing force. The apparatus is easily adaptable to most presses having toggle mechanisms such as those used in injection molding machines, and may be used to provide an accurate tonnage indication without the necessity of directly measuring tonnage such as by mounting strain gages on the tie bars.

At least one dynamic or kinematic variable of the closing mechanism is measured during at least one of the movements of the movable platen according to the first trajectory, and an estimate of at least one parameter value is generated based on the measurement. A second trajectory for the controlled or regulated movement of the movable platen is calculated based on the estimate, and the movable platen is moved in a controlled or regulated manner according to the second trajectory.
