Abstract: A device for controlling swinging doors utilizing an externally powered motor to compress a spring during door opening to store energy in the spring. The motor is not used to open the door, but only to compress the spring, thereby utilizing a minimum amount of electrical energy and allowing for a very easy opening of the door. The motor acts as a generator during the closing of the door with generated electrical energy fed back to the motor to retard rotation of the rotor, providing a brake on the closing movement of the door. The feedback circuitry includes a switch for varying the braking during the final degrees of closing movement as well as a variable setting device allowing control of braking force.

Abstract: A friction stay includes a track 10 for attachment to a window frame. The track 10 has a nose portion 14 with a curved inner surface which receives the nose portion 28 of a bar 24. Bar 24 is pivotally attached to the track 10, by a link 16 joined to the bar 24 at rivet 25 and to track 10 at rivet 17. The bar 24 is also attached to a slider 15, engaged in track 10, by a link 21 pivoted on rivets 22, 23. A brace 18 extends from link 16 to slider 15 and is attached by rivets 19, 20. Optionally an extra link 26 may be included. To provide additional strength, in accordance with this invention, a link 31 is provided, pivoted to link 16 at 32 and to a second slider 35 to 34.

Abstract: A controlled release door holder comprises a housing having a portion defining a cylinder for containment of a fluid, a piston received in the cylinder for movement axially thereof and dividing the cylinder into first and second chambers, and a linkage between the piston and the door for moving the piston in the cylinder as a function of door movement. A spring compressed between the piston and housing biases the door toward the closed position. Three hydraulic paths communicate the sections of the cylinder on either side of the piston: the first path includes a check valve that allows one-way flow from the spring side to the other side as the door is opened; a second path, which includes a pressure relief valve, allows flow from the other side to the spring side when the door is pushed closed, but resists the spring pressure and holds the door in any desired position; a controllable valve responds to control signals to shunt the fluid pressure generated by the spring in the other side of the cylinder to the spring side so that the spring force acting on the piston moves the door, by force transmission through the linkage, toward closed position.

Abstract: A device and method for automatically closing a tailgate of a motor vehicle having a body and a tailgate closing device, is described. The tailgate closing device comprises first and second closing elements. A suspension strut is situated on a first side of the tailgate and a power strut is situated on a second side of the tailgate opposite the first side. The suspension strut and the power strut are both connected to the tailgate and to the body. The first closing element is situated on the tailgate and the second closing element is situated on the body. The first and second closing elements are designed to engage into each other during the closing of the tailgate to effectuate the closure of the tailgate. The torque acting via the power strut onto the tailgate is reduced during the closing of the tailgate when the distance between the first and second closing elements is less than a threshold value.

Abstract: An apparatus combining a door hinge and a door closer is provided. In one embodiment, the hinge provides a variable hydraulic damping speed control with spring action closing, as well as an optional stop action. In one embodiment, the hinge of the present invention includes an adjustable compression spring to operate the opening and closing of the door. After the door has closed to approximately 20 degrees or so, the hydraulic component of the door may then control the speed of the door preferably from approximately 20 degrees until closed. The hydraulic component can also be adjusted to vary the speed and force of the door opening and closing. A pair of magnets may be present in the control cylinder of the hinge to provide more force to complete the closing function. Additionally, a stop function allows for the door to remain open and in place at any desired position.
