A torque limiter (51), including balls (52), ball engaging concave portions (53) and urging springs (55) are positioned between the casing (1) and the drive plates (3). The ball engaging concave portions (53) are formed on a sliding surface of the casing (1) and the balls are urged by the urging springs (55) to be pressed onto the sliding surfaces of the case (1) so as to engage with the ball engaging concave portion (53) by a specified pressure for disengagement from concave portions (53) when excessive impact torque is applied.

Apparatus for damping torsional vibrations in the power train of a motor vehicle has a first flywheel which defines an annular chamber for a supply of viscous fluid medium and carries one sealing device of a composite seal for separation of the chamber from the atmosphere. A second flywheel carries an antifriction bearing and the second sealing device of the composite seal. The first flywheel and the first sealing device form component parts of a first subassembly. The second flywheel, the second sealing device and the bearing form parts of a second subassembly. The two subassemblies are connected to each other in that the inner race of the bearing is slipped onto a cylindrical seat on an axial protuberance of the first flywheel and is retained on the protuberance of a ring which is affixed to the protuberance and overlies the inner race of the bearing. A torque-transmitting coupling between the second flywheel and the flange-like output member of a single damper or of two parallel-connected dampers in the chamber becomes operative in automatic response to attachment of the two subassemblies to each other.

In a variable inertial mass flywheel having a main flywheel member coupled to an engine crankshaft and a subflywheel member rotatably arranged relative to the main flywheel member, an electrorheological fluid whose viscosity changes according to intensity of electric field at high response speed is enclosed between electrodes formed on the main flywheel member and the subflywheel member. At engine idling, a higher voltage is applied to the electrodes to increase the viscosity of the fluid, that is, to increase inertial mass of the flywheel so that engine torque ripple can effectively be absorbed. At engine acceleration, a lower (or zero) voltages is applied to the electrodes to decrease the viscosity of the fluid, that is to decrease inertial mass of the flywheel so that high engine torque response characteristics can stably be obtained.

A torsion damping device comprises guide rings, a damper plate, and a viscous damping assembly of the kind confined within the interior of a two-piece housing. A coupling is provided for coupling this housing with the sub-assembly consisting of the guide rings, the hub and the damper plate, and for assuring its rotation with respect to this sub-assembly after a clearance has been taken up. This coupling is provided between firstly, one of the two parts of the housing and the guide rings, and secondly between the other part of the housing and the damper plate. The invention is applicable to automotive vehicles.

This invention relates to a unique transmission system for applying torque from an engine flywheel to the drive train of an automotive vehicle including a long travel viscous damped torsional damper driven by the flywheel and coupled to a continuously variable transmission which in turn is coupled to a wet drive clutch, the output of which is connected to an output counter shaft for the automotive drive train. An important part of the unique combination is the long travel viscous damped torsional damper of the invention which includes an enclosed, effectively sealed housing contains input and output members coupled through a plurality of series parallel spring sets and immersed in a viscous medium to provide effective viscous damping matched to the effective spring rate of the mechanical damping system to accommodate both transient and steady-state vibrational torques. The damper is especially useful with the continuously variable transmission but is useful in other applications as well.

In a schematically illustrated form the mechanism (30) includes a relative high rate or stiff spring set (36) for transmitting torque and alternating torsionals when a transmission input shaft (22) is connected to a load, a relatively lower or less stiff spring set (38) connected in series with spring set (36) and for attenuating torsionals when the shaft (22) is not connected to a load, and a viscous damper (44) disposed in parallel with both spring sets (36, 38) and operative to dampen recoil of both spring sets. In one detailed embodiment of the mechanism (130) the stiff spring sets (136) includes a pair of nested, spiral wound springs (135, 137). In another embodiment of the mechanism (230) the stiff spring set (236) includes helical compression springs (235, 237).
