摘要: A piston ring comprises a generally annular ring body with a series of slots spaced circumferentially about an outer periphery of the ring body, each of the slots extending radially inwardly from the outer periphery. A hinge point is formed between adjacent slots, the hinge point corresponding to the outer periphery of the ring body. A wear surface material comprising ceramics is inlayed into each of the slots. The piston ring is formed by cutting a series of slots such as scallops about the outer periphery of the ring body that extend radially inwardly from the outer periphery and inlaying a wear surface material into the slots. The inlaying step may comprise the further step of thermally spraying the material into the slots. Then the outer periphery of the ring body may be ground to expose the wear surface material and create a finished outer surface.

摘要: A piston head assembly has one, two or more grooves to receive piston rings. One or more of the grooves may receive multiple piston rings. A circumferential groove from the bottom of the elastomeric material allows oil pressure to aid in sealing. A novel piston ring employs a circumferential channel facing outwardly with a shorter bottom channel facing outwardly with a shorter bottom channel sidewall. The elastomeric material extends to form a circumferential extension cooperative with a subgroove of the piston ring groove.

摘要: Each side rail of a combined oil ring, which includes a spacer-expander and two side rails, has an ion nitriding treatment layer on an outer peripheral surface of the rail. The inner peripheral surface of each rail may either be a bare surface or have either a soft surface treatment or a hard chrome plating. The upper and lower surfaces of the rail may either be a bare surface or have a soft surface treatment. The method comprises coiling a strip to form a coil, placing the coil on a jig so that only the outer peripheral surface is exposed to the ion nitriding and then cutting the coil to form the individual rails with a gap.

摘要: A compression ring as a piston ring adapted to by received in an annular groove formed in a piston disposed in a cylinder assembly of an internal combustion engine includes an annular ring base member having a cutout portion, the ring base member having an outer sliding surface, upper and lower surfaces continuous to the sliding surface through corner portions and an inner peripheral surface to be fitted to the piston groove, the sliding surface contacting an inner wall of the cylinder when the piston reciprocates therein. A nitriding layer is formed on all the surfaces of the ring base member by a nitriding treatment. A white portion of the nitriding layer formed only on the sliding surface of the ring base member is substantially completely removed and white portions of the nitriding layer formed on the first and second surfaces and corner portions between the sliding surface and the upper and lower surfaces are removed so as to reduce thicknesses thereof to not more than 5 .mu.m.

摘要: A piston head assembly has one, two or more grooves to receive piston rings. One or more of the grooves may receive multiple piston rings. One of the piston rings may have a wiper extension on the lower outside edge of the ring either of metal or elastomeric material. An elastomeric ring is retained preferably in a recess in the lower outer edge of the ring and has an outer surface starting inset from the top outer edge of the ring, but tapering to a diameter at least as great as the top outer edge. A circumferential groove from the outer edge. A circumferential groove from the bottom of the elastomeric material allows oil pressure to aid in sealing. A novel piston ring employs a circumferential channel facing outwardly with a shorter bottom channel facing outwardly with a shorter bottom channel sidewall. The channel is filled with elastomeric material providing at its outer surface a wiper member engaging the cylinder wall. The elastomeric material extends through perforations in the bottom of the channel to form a circumferential extension cooperative with a subgroove of the piston ring groove.

摘要: A piston ring for use in an internal combustion engine. The piston ring includes a base body, a nitriding layer formed at an outer peripheral surface portion of the base body, and a composite Ni-B diffusion plating layer formed over the nitriding layer. The composite Ni-B diffusion plating layer has a thickness ranging from 0.5 to 20 micron meters. Since the nitriding layer is provided on at least the sliding surface of the piston ring, high durability of the piston ring can be attained because of the high wear resistivity of the nitriding layer. Further, since a Ni-Bi composite dispersion plating layer is formed over the nitriding layer, abnormal wearing due to scuffing is avoidable at an initial working phase because of the high scuffing resistance of the composite plating layer.

摘要: A method of treating piston rings to render their surfaces extremely hard-wearing, wherein the rings are assembled in batches on a tubular mandrel which is then surrounded by a matching cylinder, the mandrel bearing the rings and the cylinder being subjected to relative cyclical motion while a slurry of hard silicon carbide particles is poured into the cylinder. Either the wall of the tubular mandrel, or the wall of the cylinder, or both, are provided with holes to allow the slurry to flow away. The cyclical motion may consist of relative rotation at 170 r.p.m. and simultaneous relative reciprocation at 5 cycles per minute. The slurry may consist of 220 mesh silicon carbide powder in oil, with the treatment lasting for one minute, and preferably this is followed by a further treatment of one minute with a 400 mesh silicon carbide particle slurry.
