摘要: A novel synthetic mixed-layer silicate consisting of the layers of serpentine and layers of saponite each having a specified chemical composition is proposed, which has excellent dispersibility in water to form a colloidal dispersion capable of being converted into a gel by standing to be useful as a gelating agent exhibiting thixotropy along with unique porosity characteristics which enable the use thereof as an adsorbent. The mixed-layer silicate is prepared by the process comprising the steps of: (a) preparing an acidic aqueous solution containing silicic acid, magnesium salt and aluminum salt; (b) alkalifying the solution by the addition of an alkaline compound to precipitate a hydrous composite oxide containing silicon, magnesium and aluminum; (c) collecting the precipitates of the hydrous composite oxide; (d) admixing the precipitates of the hydrous composite oxide with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide to give an aqueous slurry; and (e) subjecting the aqueous slurry of the hydrous composite oxide to a hydrothermal treatment by heating at a temperature up to 500.degree. C.

摘要: Disclosed is a novel hydrous composite oxide of cerium (IV) and phosphorus characterized by the specified chemical composition and the unique X-ray diffractometric pattern, which is useful as an adsorbent or immobilizing agent of strontium ions in an aqueous solution such as radioactive wastes from atomic power plants. The composite oxide prepared by the precipitation reaction of a Ce (IV) salt in an aqueous solution and phosphoric acid can be imparted with an increased adsorption capacity for strontium ions when the precipitates are heat-treated under hydrothermal conditions at up to 300.degree. C. Immobilization of strontium ions adsorbed on the adsorbent can be more complete when the adsorbent bearing strontium ions is dried and subjected to a heat treatment at a temperature of 200.degree. C. or higher.

摘要: The object of the present invention is to provide a piston ring which is free from occurrence of cracks on the nitrided layer and having enhanced abrasion resistance and fatigue strength, and to provide a process for manufacturing the piston ring. In the invention, a surface of the steel body is subjected to a two-stage nitriding treatment consisting of low-temperature nitriding and high-temperature nitriding. A white layer on the slidable surface along the inner periphery surface of a cylinder is removed, and a white layer on each of the upper and lower surfaces and the corner portions each being adjacent to the slidable surface is removed to have a thickness of not more than 5 .mu.m.

摘要: A capillary array capable of being easily mounted on an electrophoresis apparatus without damaging the capillaries. The capillary array can include a plurality of capillaries that can be fixed via hollow electrodes on a load header in a matrix arrangement. The load header can be disposed on the electrophoresis apparatus. The capillary array can include a capillary frame onto which a capillary head and a detection portion can be detachably mounted. The structure allows the load header, the capillary head, the detection unit and other portions of the capillary array to be handled as a unit, thereby making it easier to mount the capillary array on the electrophoresis apparatus.

摘要: A compression ring as a piston ring adapted to by received in an annular groove formed in a piston disposed in a cylinder assembly of an internal combustion engine includes an annular ring base member having a cutout portion, the ring base member having an outer sliding surface, upper and lower surfaces continuous to the sliding surface through corner portions and an inner peripheral surface to be fitted to the piston groove, the sliding surface contacting an inner wall of the cylinder when the piston reciprocates therein. A nitriding layer is formed on all the surfaces of the ring base member by a nitriding treatment. A white portion of the nitriding layer formed only on the sliding surface of the ring base member is substantially completely removed and white portions of the nitriding layer formed on the first and second surfaces and corner portions between the sliding surface and the upper and lower surfaces are removed so as to reduce thicknesses thereof to not more than 5 .mu.m.
