Abstract: A method of identifying an instruction combination executable by a surface control system of a drilling rig to change settings of a rotary steerable system (“RSS”) tool. The method includes identifying, by an electronic application, a first current RSS setting of the RSS tool; identifying, by the electronic application, a first target RSS setting of the RSS tool; identifying, by the electronic application, a plurality of instruction combinations configured to change the first current RSS setting to the first target RSS setting. Each instruction combination of the plurality of instruction combinations comprises a number of steps, and each step includes a downlink command sequence. The method also includes selecting, by the electronic application, an instruction combination that comprises the least number of steps.

Abstract: A system and method for delivering volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCI) for protecting against external corrosion to the bottom, soil-side, surface of a storage tank is disclosed. The VCI delivery system can include a transport material buried underneath the tank and a carrier structure for containing the transport material. VCI can be supplied to the transport material from an external VCI storage tank and the supply regulated by a control valve. The transport material is configured to adaptively and controllably release VCI into the soil in response an external stimulus. The transport material can passively adjust the VCI release rate as a function of a stimulus including pH or soil potential. Additionally, a control system can monitor soil conditions and generate the stimulus that triggers the release of the VCI. Also disclosed are systems and methods for deploying the VCI delivery system under the tank using horizontal drilling techniques.

Abstract: A hard facing is preferably accomplished with laser clad beads applied to horizontal directional drilling (HDD) component(s). These components may be subject to recirculating fluid regions associated to stepped geometries along a drill string, including various drill string coupling members. For example, laser cladding can be applied to a step region of the sonar housing and starter rod. A method applies a hard face coating such as laser cladding or other suitable hard facing in areas of tight geometric tolerances.

Abstract: A system for tracking a below-ground transmitter from an aerial receiver. The receiver has an antenna assembly, a processor, and a propulsion system. The antenna assembly detects the magnetic field from an underground transmitter and generates an antenna signal. The processor is programmed to receive the antenna signal and generate a command signal, which moves the receiver to a position above the transmitter. Once in the desired position, which may be a reference plane at a fixed elevation, the antenna assembly measures the magnetic field to determine the location of the drill bit along borepath.

In response to a determination that the offset well has been drilled at the wellsite, the method further includes determining a well path of the offset well and one or more parameters of the offset well, and plotting the well path of the offset well, wherein the well path of the offset well and the trajectory of the target well are superimposed over each other.

Abstract: The disclosed embodiments include a method, apparatus, and computer program product configured to performing automated downhole wellbore trajectory control for correcting between an actual wellbore trajectory path and a planned wellbore trajectory path. For example, in one embodiment, a PID controller is configured to obtain real-time data gathered during the drilling operation, determine whether the actual wellbore trajectory path deviates from the planned wellbore trajectory path, and automatically initiate the downhole wellbore trajectory control to change the actual wellbore trajectory path to a modified correction path that is determined using a minimum incremental wellbore energy method.
