    摘要: The device of the invention can be used for evaluating the cutting ability of knives and other like cutting tools. The device includes a rigid body (2) with a slide (10) receiving a foam rod (12), and a bearing surface (8) substantially perpendicular to the slide (10) for positioning and guiding the cutting tool (16) to be tested. The foam rod (12) includes two visually discernible portions (13, 14) placed one above the other, and in particular having different colours, and is placed in the slide (10) so as to project from the front of the bearing surface (8). The test comprises cutting the protruding end of the rod (12) by reciprocating (F) the tool (16), and assessing whether the blade (15) has cut only the upper portion (13) or both portions (13, 14) of the rod. The device can be used for testing knives, surgical instruments, farming and gardening tools, industrial cutting tools, etc.

    摘要: The present invention relates to a method of designing, previewing a stone veneer project in its entirety before a single stone is cut; cutting and finishing the edges of a stone to form interconnecting natural stone veneer components, each having a perimeter of a pre-determined contour and a finished edge, the method comprising: drawing or otherwise importing a design plan comprising overall dimensions and shape of a finished stone veneer project; drawing or otherwise importing a pattern of shape and placement of the stone veneer components within the design plan; programming, scanning or otherwise inputting a plurality of cutting patterns, wherein the cutting patterns are the same or different, each cutting pattern designed to form the stone veneer component having a perimeter of a pre-determined contour; converting the pattern into a machine-readable program to produce a cutting path on an abrasive waterjet machine; loading a cutting path file for the stone veneer component into the abrasive water jet machine; positioning a cutting head of the waterjet machine over the natural stone at a distance of from about 0.3 inch to about 4 inches from a contact surface of the stone; running the cutting path program and cutting through the stone by contacting the contact surface of the stone with a waterjet from the waterjet machine.

    摘要: A method for measuring the machinability of a material which includes piercing a hole through a material to be tested while simultaneously measuring a pierce time duration, T, of the piercing step, and calculating a machinability number from the pierce time duration. Also provided are methods for determining the machining speed of a material and for machining a material which calculate a machining speed for a material based upon the machinability number of the material. The methods used to measure the machinability number and calculate a machining speed for a particular material can include any combination of machining operations, including but not limited to AWJ cutting processes. Also provided is an apparatus which detects the time duration a piercing force takes to create a pierce-through condition through a material. The apparatus includes any of a pressure sensor, an acoustic sensor, an optical sensor, a load cell, a mechanical switch, and combinations thereof to measure the pierce-time duration.

The method is broadly defined as including the steps of determining a tool coating effect factor and a chip-groove effect factor for the coated, grooved cutting tool. Additionally, the method includes the calculation of a tool-life for the coated, grooved cutting tool. The method takes into account selected machining operation conditions such as the characteristics of the workpiece material to be cut, the depth of cut, the feed rate, the cutting speed and the cutting tool geometry.

    摘要: An apparatus and method to determine the sharpness of a curved surgical needle point by a measurement of the perpendicular forces required to push the needle point through a supported membrane at a given rate of penetration. The apparatus includes a needle penetration fixture having a needle penetrable membrane, a load cell, and related control and recordation instrumentation. According to the method a needle is mounted on a rotatable fixture and first precisely aligned. Thereafter, the fixture is rotated so as to cause the needle to penetrate the membrane whereby the force necessary to penetrate the membrane force being recorded by recordation instrumentation and the process being controlled by control instrumentation.

    摘要: An apparatus adapted to be mounted on a surface grinding machine is provided for testing abrasive grains in single-grit scratch tests. To permit specimen preparation and scratching to be carried out on a single machine without changeover and without reclamping the specimen, and to maintain the infeed in the scratching operation constant by giving the specimen a contour corresponding to the cross-feed error, a belt grinder and a scratching device comprising a support disk, mounted by means of a main flange and a counterflange, and a scratching disk mounted on the main flange and carrying a single grain secured to its periphery along with a force-measuring system disposed thereunder, are designed as a structural unit adapted to be mounted on the spindle of the surface grinding machine, with a belt tensioning arm mounted to the headstock. The requisite natural frequency of the force-measuring system is obtained by locating a grain holder, a piezoelectric quartz crystal and a necked-down titanium bolt with rapid-acting tightening means on the rotating scratching disk beneath the abrasive grain.
