摘要: A modular dry spent fuel canister system in which several different types of inner spent nuclear fuel canisters can be loaded into the same outer cask family. This family typically includes a storage overpack, a transfer cask, a transportation cask and support or auxiliary hardware. The various canisters can be loaded interchangeably into the different types of outer casks. The inner canisters are differentiated not by physical fuel type or dimension, but by the engineering objective or criterion that applies to the spent fuel being stored. One such objective may be for a single canister to store a large number of assemblies economically and safely. A second is a canister designed to greatly reduce the cooling time (or radioactive decay time) that must pass in order to load spent nuclear fuel for off-site storage, so as to meet the decay heat requirements and capabilities of the off-site storage system.

摘要: Techniques for testing subterranean water for one or more radioactive isotopes for a hazardous waste material repository include collecting, from a test drillhole formed from a terranean surface to a subterranean formation, a subterranean water sample from the subterranean formation; determining, with an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) system, a concentration of a radioactive isotope of an element in the subterranean water sample relative to a stable isotope of the element in the subterranean water sample; comparing the determined concentration of the radioactive isotope of the element in the subterranean water sample with a concentration of the radioactive isotope of the element in a surface water sample relative to the stable isotope of the element in the surface water sample; and based on the determined concentration of the radioactive isotope in the subterranean water sample being a specified percentage of the concentration of the radioactive isotope in the surface water sample, determining that the subterranean formation is a hazardous waste storage repository.

摘要: A fuel storage system for storing and drying nuclear fuel rods includes a vertically oriented capsule defining an internal cavity. A plurality of fuel rod storage tubes is disposed in the cavity. In one embodiment, each storage tube has a transverse cross section configured and dimensioned to hold no more than one fuel rod. Intact or damaged fuel rods may be stored in the storage tubes. After the fuel rods are loaded into the capsule, a lid is attached to a previously open top end of the capsule. In one embodiment, the lid may be sealed welded to the capsule for forming a gas tight enclosure. The interior of the capsule and multiple fuel rods contained therein may be dried together simultaneously via flow conduits formed in the lid that can be fluidly connected to a suitable drying process such as a forced gas dehydration system.

摘要: The invention concerns a package for transporting and/or storing radioactive materials. The package comprises a wall element (26) and a cooling element (31, 32) attached to the wall element (26) and protruding from the wall element (26) towards the outside of the package. The cooling element (31, 32) comprises a base (40) and at least one fin (35) rigidly connected to the base (40). The base (40) extends to either side of the fin (35) respectively towards two opposing lateral ends of the base, each of the lateral ends being attached to the wall element (26) via a weld.

摘要: A hazardous material storage bank includes a wellbore extending into the Earth and including an entry at least proximate a terranean surface, the wellbore including a substantially vertical portion, a transition portion, and a substantially horizontal portion; a storage area coupled to the substantially horizontal portion of the well bore, the storage area within or below a shale formation, the storage area vertically isolated, by the shale formation, from a subterranean zone that includes mobile water; a storage container positioned in the storage area, the storage container sized to fit from the wellbore entry through the substantially vertical, the transition, and the substantially horizontal portions of the wellbore, and into the storage area, the storage container including an inner cavity sized enclose hazardous material; and a seal positioned in the wellbore, the seal isolating the storage portion of the wellbore from the entry of the wellbore.

摘要: A container is designed to safely store radioactive debris from, for example, a nuclear reactor meltdown, in water or air. The container, with preferably although not necessarily all metal parts, has an overpack having an elongated cylindrical body extending between a top end and a bottom end, a planar bottom part at the bottom end, an open top at the top end, and a circular planar lid mounted over the open top. A basket is situated inside of the overpack. The basket has a plurality of elongated cylindrical canisters that are in parallel along their lengths. Each of the canisters has an elongated cylindrical body extending between a top end and a bottom end, a planar bottom part at the bottom end, an open top at the top end, and a circular planar lid mounted over the open top.
