Power is provided to the stator windings of an AC induction machine which includes a component at the fundamental drive frequency for the machine and a superimposed signal component which is at a substantially higher frequency than the drive power. The fundamental drive power is provided at a level which results in saturation in the stator which follows the magnetic flux vector. The stator response at the signal frequency is then detected to provide a correlation between the response at the signal frequency and the magnetic flux vector position. The detection of the response at the signal frequency is preferably carried out by a heterodyne detection process, by mixing signals at the signal frequency with the measured stator currents, and filtering the mixed signals to isolate the signal indicative of the flux vector position.

An electric induction motor having at least two phases and including opposed slotted stator bodies or pole pieces with each slot receiving a radially extending leg or like portion of at least one coil winding, and with the stator being preferably of an annular, segmented configurationand the rotor being a low inertia, non-magnetic, radially slotted, electrically conductive disc axially spaced from the face of the stator bodies. The motor is particularly adapted for direct drive of rapidly reversible driven members, such as washing machine agitators or the like, and is characterized by high starting torque and a relatively direct proportional relation between the applied voltage and available output torques. In use, the motor operates at varying speeds and torque as it reverses direction and accelerates to a given rotational velocity, drawing substantially constant power during use. The current paths characterizing the unit are similar to the currents in a squirrel cage motor, while an axial gap, low inertia rotor provides the advantages of easy reversibility and maximal heat loss.

A starting control apparatus for an AC load includes a bidirectional triode thyristor switching device connected in series between an AC power source and the load, a rectifying circuit connected in parallel to the bidirectional triode thyristor switching device, a first time constant circuit connected between output terminals of the rectifying circuit which discharges to turn on the bidirectional triode thyristor switching device when the charged potential reaches a predetermined potential, a second time constant circuit connected between the output terminals of the rectifying circuit and having a time constant larger than the time constant of the first time constant circuit and maintaining the charged potential in the ON state of the bidirectional triode thyristor switching device, and a speedy charging device which rapidly increases the charged potential to the sustaining potential of the second time constant circuit during the recharging period for the first time constant circuit while recovering the controlling ability of the bidirectional triode thyristor switching device and which gradually decreases the period for charging the first time constant circuit to the predetermined potential. When the load is an inductive load such as an induction motor, a third time constant circuit having a time constant larger than the time constant of the second time constant circuit is preferably connected between output terminals of the rectifying circuit.

A method and apparatus for operating a rotating field machine, which is controlled by an inverter of the type which provides only a predetermined limited number of discrete positions of the stator current vector, in such a manner so that when it is desired to position the machine between two of the discrete vector positions, the discrete positions on each side of the desired vector position are alternatively energized resulting in an average position which is the desired vector position. For operation in a system where the vector can only rotate in one direction apparatus is disclosed which permits the alternate energization to occur by moving the vector at the maximum possible speed over the portion of rotation which is outside an area surrounding the desired position and moving it more slowly while inside this area.

A direct current motor having at least two armatures arranged in parallel between parallel magnetic circuits established through the armatures independently exciting the armatures. In one embodiment a pair of iron core coils, positioned on respective opposing sides of a pair of armatures, provides the magnetic circuit. In another embodiment an iron core coil, interposed between two or more parallel armatures, forms the magnetic circuit. This common source of magnetic excitation forms parallel magnetic circuits wherein the motor has a dual operating characteristic in that the speed of one armature varies inversely with the speed of the other armature and vice versa until the higher speed armature reaches its critical rpm permitting the load to be increased without further change in the speed of either armature.
