Abstract: A system and method for position sensorless control of an AC electric machine is disclosed. A drive system for driving an AC electric machine provides a primary current excitation to drive the AC electric machine, the primary current excitation comprising a current vector having a magnitude and angle. The drive system injects a carrier signal to the AC electric machine that is superimposed onto the current vector, with the carrier signal being selected to generate a carrier response signal that has sensitivity to magnetic alignment information of the AC electric machine at its operating point. The drive system measures at least one magnetic alignment signature of the AC electric machine from the generated carrier response signal and controls an orientation of the current vector using the measured at least one magnetic alignment signature, so as to achieve a desired magnetic operation of the AC electric machine.

Abstract: A system and method for sensing rotor position of a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) includes a controller coupled with the PMSM and causing a plurality of voltage pulses to be applied thereto. A timer and/or an analog-to-digital converter is coupled with the PMSM and measures a plurality of values (measured values) from a three-phase inverter coupled with the PMSM. Each measured value may correspond with one of the plurality of voltage pulses and includes a current value or time value corresponding with an inductance of the PMSM. One or more logic elements calculates, based on the measured values and on one or more position algorithms, a position of a rotor of the PMSM relative to a stator of the PMSM. The system is configured to calculate the position of the rotor when the rotor is in a stopped configuration and when the rotor is in a rotating configuration.

Abstract: A method and system for adaptive sensorless determination of the position of a PMSM motor is described. The system and method include: determining the rotor position and the rotor polarity by means of discrete signal injection for the range between standstill up to low rotational speed; determining the rotor position by means of continuous signal injection at a rotational speed that is lower than a first changeover speed; determining the rotor position by means of back EMF at a rotational speed that is higher than the first changeover speed; wherein by means of a motor control system, depending on the rotational speed, a switch is made between rotor position determination by continuous signal injection and rotor position determination by back EMF; and wherein during movement of the rotor, the rotor polarity and/or the rotor position are/is monitored and optionally adjusted at a point in time using the rotor polarity and/or the rotor position at a previous point in time.

Abstract: A method for operating a brushless direct current motor wherein, by the energization of a plurality of armature coils which are arranged on a stator and form a three-phase current winding for generating a rotating field which rotates around the stator, and having three terminals, a rotating field is generated in order to drive a rotor, which is rotatable about an axis of rotation relative to the stator and has at least two opposing permanent magnet poles. For the determination of the position of the rotor relative to the stator a measurement voltage signal is applied between a first and second of the terminals, a resulting voltage is measured on a third of the terminals, a gradient value which indicates the gradient of the resulting voltage in a time interval is determined with reference to the progression over time of the resulting voltage.
