    摘要: A device for priming an empty or partially full burner manifold of a gas turbine engine with fuel before it is required to supply from the burner manifold to the associated burners comprises a fuel accumulator and a control valve.A fuel pressure signal supplied to the control valve terminates the supply of relatively high pressure fuel to the fuel accumulator via the control valve. A metered quantity of fuel is supplied via the control valve to the burner manifold from the fuel accumulator by the motive force of a spring acting on a piston in the accumulator. The metered quantity of fuel is supplied via the control valve to the burner manifold, to fill the burner manifold and to prevent undesireable drops in the quantity of fuel being supplied to other manifolds when the regulated fuel is supplied to the burner manifold.

    摘要: A gas turbine propulsion engine for aircraft of the type in which thrust is provided only from flow of exhaust gases or a combination of flow of exhaust gases and by-pass air, the engine having a cone-shaped spinner with a solid pointed tip portion and a main body portion. The tip portion has at least a surface made of a different material from the substantially rigid material of the main body portion, the at least surface of the tip portion being flexible relative to the body portion at operational rotations of the spinner whereby ice is automatically shed from the spinner due to cracks being developed at the bond between the tip portion and the main body portion. The cracks in the ice developed at the bond are propagated by the surface deflection of the remainder of the tip portion causing any accretion of ice thereon to shed from the remainder of the spinner.

    摘要: A seal for use in rotating machinery such as a gas turbine engine comprises two pole pieces attached to the engine casing and defining a gap in which a magnetic powder is held by a magnetic field generated by a permanent magnet, electro-magnet or a combination of the two. The non-magnetic fins of the adjacent rotor (e.g. turbine blades), extend into the gap and distort the magnetic field so that while there is a small clearance between the fin and the powder, this small clearance can be maintained approximately the same whatever the position of the fin in the gap. A seeding tube allows magnetic powder to be supplied to the gap to make good any loss of powder.

    摘要: The process involves the steps of:spraying droplets of an aqueous alcohol input solution through spray-bars into a heat transfer fluid contained within a refrigerated process vessel and allowing the droplets to fall through the heat transfer fluid so that some of the water separates out as ice in the droplets;collecting the droplets as a slurry of ice and concentrated solution at the bottom of the process vessel andsubsequently removing the ice to produce a concentrated output solution from the process.The process can be repeated in subsequent process stages up to a limiting concentration of 92% by weight of alcohol in the case of ethanol. The invention includes apparatus in which the process can be performed. Means by which the efficiency of the process may be optimized are also included.

    摘要: Combustion apparatus for gas turbine engines has a combustion chamber (4,5) provided with fuel/air mixture injection devices (11) in an upstream end wall (9,10) of the chamber. Each device has a passage (17) having inlets (12,15) for air and fuel which mix in the passage and discharge through an outlet (19) initially in a direction along the adjacent surface of said chamber end wall (9,10). The latter wall has a secondary inlet (20) admitting a stream of air transversely to the flow from the passage outlet (19) thereby to generate an oblique flow (19A) having a component movement (Y) away from the combustion chamber wall. This directs inflammable mixture away from the latter wall and simultaneously assists mixing of air and fuel. A cooling film (24,24A) passing along the chamber wall passes over the passage wall (16) and, in certain examples, between the oblique flow and the chamber wall.

    摘要: Some turbine blades are produced by casting, using the lost wax process. The blades may include cooling air passages and the wall thickness of these is tested ultrasonically i.e. by transmitting and receiving acoustic pulses from and to, a common transducer.Lately the blades, having been cast, are directionally solidified. This process changes the grain structure such that during inspection, pulses received by the blade, have been dissipated. The invention provides ultrasonic testing ability by using a unidirectional pulse transmission system, resulting in pulses which, having passed outwards through the passage wall, still have sufficient energy to effect an indication of wall thickness.
