    摘要: A method of making a reinforced laminate, including the steps of placing a reinforcing grid on a first outer sheet of thermoplastic, preparing an elastomeric material capable of forming a tie layer between two sheets of thermoplastic, and laminating a second outer sheet of thermoplastic to the first sheet of thermoplastic and the reinforcing grid with the tie layer of elastomeric material therebetween, whereby the reinforcing grid is held by the elastomeric tie layer in between the first outer sheet of thermoplastic and the second outer sheet of thermoplastic, and the reinforcing grid being displaceable within the elastomeric tie layer. A reinforced laminate, including a first outer layer of thermoplastic, a second outer layer of thermoplastic, a reinforcing grid disposed between the first outer layer and the second outer layer, a tie layer of elastomeric material disposed between the first outer layer and the second outer layer arranged to hold the reinforcing grid but allow slippage of the reinforcing grid in the tie layer upon tensile loading of the reinforced laminate, and wherein the first outer layer, the second outer layer, the reinforcing grid, and the tie layer are laminated together to form a reinforced laminate.

    摘要: A method and an apparatus are described for making a filamentary web. One or more strands of roving, each composed of multiple filaments, are spread out to increasing extents until the filaments form a band in which they extend unidirectionally and generally parallel to each other, but are not connected with one another. Adhesive strips, threads or other connecting elements are then transported on a carrier into a working station so as to be positioned transverse to the elongation of the band. In the working station, they are transferred to the band and joined to the filaments under application of contact pressure in the nip between cooperating nip rollers. This converts the band into a unitary filamentary web structure in which the filaments are all unidirectionally oriented.

    摘要: A process of reinforcing a sheetlike substrate by applying a plurality of linear reinforcements comprising a filamentary core having a pre-coating of "hot melt" adhesive to the substrate with at least one of the linear reinforcements applied in a generally serpentine or waveform pattern to provide both in-machine and cross-machine tensile strength and tear resistance. The present invention is also an improved reinforced sheetlike substrate having the linear reinforcements applied thereon in accordance with the process. In one embodiment, adjacent linear reinforcements are applied in an overlapping or interlocking serpentine configuration onto the substrate. In one embodiment of the process, the sheetlike substrate is conducted along a path defined as the in-machine direction while the plurality of linear reinforcing members are fed through a guide member that is reciprocating transversely with respect to the in-machine direction. The temperature of the thermoplastic adhesive is raised above its softening point and then allowed to harden to bond the linear reinforcing members onto the substrate.

    摘要: A method is described for making a fiber-reinforced composite film sheet (fiber/film laminate) by continuously forming a first planar lap from a plurality of machine-direction (MD) fibers, continuously forming a second planar lap from a single fiber as transverse-direction (TD) reaches which are connected by 180.degree. loops by stretching the fiber between a horizontally diverging pair of chain assemblies, continuously straddling both laps with a pair of co-extruded films which extend sidewardly beyond the loops, vertically converging the films and fibers to form a sandwich, edge sealing the sandwich within strips close to its side edges but inwardly of the loops, lifting the loops from the chain assemblies, sidewardly smoothing and tautening the sandwich, and laminating the sandwich with heat and pressure to form the composite film sheet.The apparatus for carrying out this method comprises a creel and fiber guides for supplying the MD fibers as the first planar lap; a pair of endlessly revolving roller chain assemblies supporting rows of spindles which are arranged to be initially interwoven, subsequently divergent, and finally in parallel movement to form the second planar lap of TD reaches having their loops over the selectively spaced-apart rows of spindles; at least one bobbin and an engagement support stand for supplying the TD fiber to the initially interwoven spindles; a film storage and feed assembly for supplying the pair of co-extruded films; a film turning and expanding assembly for alignment of the films into straddling relationship to the planar laps of fibers and for sidewise expansion of the films; a converging assembly for arranging the MD and TD fibers and the pair of films to form a fiber/film sandwich; an edge-sealing assembly for heat-sealing the sandwich within a strip which is disposed close to the loops at each edge but inwardly of the loops; a film pickup assembly for lifting the rows of loops from the spindles; an edge puller assembly for smoothing and tautening the edge-sealed sandwich; a laminating assembly for heat sealing the co-extruded films, MD fibers, and TD fiber together to form the fiber-reinforced composite sheet; and a winder for winding the sheet into a roll.
