    摘要: Nonsymbiotic hemoglobins are broadly present across evolution; however, the function of these proteins is unknown. Cultured maize cells have been transformed to constitutively express a barley hemoglobin gene in either the sense (HB+) or antisense (HB−) orientation. Hemoglobin protein in the transformed cell lines was correspondingly higher or lower than in wild type cells under normal atmospheric conditions. Limiting oxygen availability, by placing the cells in a nitrogen atmosphere for 12 hours, had little effect on the energy status of cells constitutively expressing hemoglobin, but had a pronounced effect on both wild type and HB− cells, where ATP levels declined by 27% and 61% respectively. Energy charge was relatively unaffected by the treatment in HB+ and wild type cells, but was reduced from 0.91 to 0.73 in HB− cells suggesting that the latter were incapable of maintaining their energy status under the low oxygen regime. Similar results were observed with P. aeruginosa cells transformed with an Hb expression vector. It is suggested that nonsymbiotic hemoglobins act to maintain the energy status of cells in low oxygen environments and that they accomplish this effect by promoting glycolytic flux through NADH oxidation, resulting in increased substrate level phosphorylation. Nonsymbiotic hemoglobins are likely ancestors of an early form of hemoglobin that sequestered oxygen in low oxygen environments, providing a source of oxygen to oxidize NADH to provide ATP for cell growth and development. This in turn suggests that cells containing increased levels of Hb protein will survive longer under low oxygen tension or high energy demand.

    摘要: The invention discloses a slot antenna assembly for a wireless communications device having a printed wiring board element defining at least a ground plane and an input/output RF connection point. The antenna assembly further includes a dielectric element having a pair of opposed major surfaces; a conductive feed circuit disposed upon one of the major surfaces, said feed circuit coupled to the RF connection point of the printed wiring board; and a resonator circuit including a pair of resonator arms oriented approximately parallel to each other, said pair of resonator arms being coupled together via a conductive connection and defining a substantially elongate slot, one of said pair of resonator arms being conductively coupled to the feed circuit, and the other of said pair of resonator arms being conductively coupled to the ground plane of the printed wiring board.     摘要: A marking instrument, such as a pen, is disclosed. The marking instrument includes a marking tip carried at the end of a tubular member for conducting marking fluid to the marking tip. The marking tip includes a tubular rear end section of circular cross-section. The tubular member is elliptical in cross-section and is attached to the tubular rear end section of the marking tip at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the tubular member. The elliptical shape of the tubular member allows for a circular profile opening when the tubular member is cut at an angle to join the tubular rear end section of the marking tip. Because the complementary profiles are circular in shape at the connection plane, it is not necessary to rotationally orient the components when bringing them together to be joined. The tubular rear end section of the marking tip may also be elliptical in shape, thereby requiring both the tubular rear end section and the tubular member to be cut at similar angles to produce the circular profile opening.

    摘要: An asymmetric dipole antenna assembly is provided for wireless communications devices, and includes separate upper and lower conductor traces and a low impedance feedpoint at the junction of the conductor traces. The upper conductor trace may include a matching network and may be printed on a planar printed circuit board mounted proximate the top of the a hand-held wireless transceiver. The upper conducting trace provides ¼ wave resonance over a desired frequency range and a 50 ohm input impedance for the antenna. The lower conductor trace may be provided by the ground trace of the wireless device circuitry, requiring only a minimum effective trace length of ¼ wavelength at the lowest frequency of operation. Polarization of the antenna is determined by the orientation of the longest dimension of the lower conductor.
