Abstract: An air-conveying apparatus for moving articles along a path of travel at varying speeds comprises in combination a pneumatic conveyor for supporting the articles, a fan operatively coupled to the conveyor to provide air under pressure to the pneumatic conveyor to convey the articles there along, a damper to restrict the flow of air through the fan, and a controller responsive to a signal to vary the positioning of the damper and thereby vary the flow of air through the fan and consequently vary the speed of the articles being conveyed.

Abstract: A neck guide air conveyor having passageways formed above the support structure for the neck guides to direct pressurized air over the collars of articles to propel the articles. The passageways are connected to a source of pressurized air and direct the pressurized air at an inclined and downstream angle over the collars of the articles from a point above the support structure for the neck guides. The passageways may be partially formed of a plurality of channels integrally molded in the support structure for the neck guides. The passageways may also be partially formed by a spacer having a plurality of slots open toward the articles where the spacer is placed above and adjacent the support structure for the neck guides.

Abstract: An air handling system comprising a track having a lower extent for supporting an object to be conveyed by the flow of pressurized air and an upper extent having a plenum chamber for receiving pressurized air and for directing it in contact with the object to be conveyed for effecting movement of the object. The track also has air-directing louvers between the upper and lower extents and an aperture in the upper extent. An impeller is mounted adjacent to the aperture of the upper extent of the track. A tapering input duct with an inlet end and a circular outlet end are mounted adjacent to the impeller with a circular screen in the outlet of the duct adjacent to the impeller. The screen has a centrally disposed hole. A baffle is mounted adjacent to the screen. The baffle includes a plurality of pie-shaped segments each with an arcuate outer edge overlying the periphery of the screen and with V-shaped interior edges with a hole. The segments are similarly configured. The baffle also includes a threaded rod extending through the holes of the segment and screen with an associated locking nut to hold the segment in a preselected orientation with respect to the screen between a fully opened upper orientation when the segments overlie each other and a fully closed orientation of about 0 degrees where the edges of all the segments overlie each other.

Abstract: A conveyor apparatus is provided which includes a pair of conveyor belts constructed from a resilient material and arranged to securely grip and release the neck ring of bottles to be conveyed. Each one of the conveyor belts is formed with a groove having coacting opposed sides. The opposed sides part to open the groove to facilitate and expedite receiving the bottle neck ring in the grooves of the conveyor belts. The opposed sides of the groove then coact to close the groove and securely grip the neck ring therebetween to transport the bottle. At the discharge area of the conveyor line, the opposed sides once again flex away from the groove to facilitate and expedite the discharge of the bottle from the groove of the conveyor belts.

Abstract: A bottle conveyor has a neck guide formed from opposed lips which are sufficiently thin to be used with bottles having extremely small neck rings and/or extremely short necks and which permit air to be directed onto the bottles from plenum slots positioned directly beneath the neck ring. The lips of the neck guide are preferably formed from a relatively hard, strong, low friction resinous plastic rather than conventional UHMW plastic or metallic lips. The high plenum slots and low friction lip material combine in operation to eliminate the need for a second plenum and thus substantially reduce floor space required by the conveyor as well as the amount of air required for conveyance. The air flowing against the necks of the bottles also provides substantial lift onto the bottles, thus reducing drag and thereby reducing further the amount of air required for conveyance.

Abstract: A conveying system is disclosed for conveying unstable articles having a neck ring. A combiner unit controls single filing of articles conveyed along the plural paths to a discharge conveyor through use of star wheel actuators, the arms of a first group of which are moved in the downstream direction along the plural paths with the arms being configured to engage the neck rings of articles then on the plural paths and thereafter control movement of the articles in conjunction with a second group of star wheel actuators, the arms of which are also moved in the downstream direction along the plural paths.

Abstract: A pneumatic conveyor apparatus for conveying articles, such as empty aluminum cans and plastic bottles, includes first and second air ducts for supplying pneumatic pressure to move the articles along a predetermined path. The first and second air ducts are positionable on respective opposite sides of the path. In another embodiment, selected ones of the air vents are positionable for directing a flow of air on the respective bottom surfaces of the articles to provide the lifting force.
