In one general implementation, the present application relates to a method for increasing efficiency of a symmetrical blade comprising providing a rigid portion of the symmetrical blade and providing a flexible portion of the symmetrical blade. The rigid portion of the symmetrical blade can be connected to the flexible portion of the symmetrical blade. The flexible portion of the symmetrical blade can be adapted to bend with a flow across the symmetrical blade. The symmetrical blade can be adapted to rotate in one direction for a bi-directional flow across the symmetrical blade. The symmetrical blade can be adapted for at least one of a Wells Energy Conversion (WEC) system, a fan, an exhaust system, a blowing system, and a suction system. The rigid portion of the symmetrical blade can be fixed to an axis perpendicular to a direction of flow. The symmetrical blade can be rotated in a direction orthogonal to the direction of flow and orthogonal to the bending of the symmetrical blade. The rigid portion may comprise metal, wood, and plastic. The flexible portion may comprise plastic and rubber. The symmetrical blade may comprise a pear-shaped blade or a rectangular-shaped blade.

A caisson breakwater provided with vertical duct 2″, room 3″, air-duct 4″, self-rectifying turbine 5″. Under the fluctuations of wave pressure on the outer opening 6, the water, alternately, enters and exits, so that the air in room 3″, alternately, is compressed and expands, and an alternate air flow is produced in the air-duct 4″. The vertical duct 2″ and the room 3′, form a U-conduit, and the air in the room 3″ acts as a spring. The eigenperiod of oscillations in said U-conduit grows as the width of the vertical duct 2″ is reduced and/or the length of said vertical duct is increased, and/or the width and height of the room 3″ is increased. The eigenperiod is fixed close to the wave period of the waves which convey the largest amount of wave energy in a year, so as to absorb a very large quantity of wave energy.

A wave collector structure (51) for electrical power generation powered by wave energy comprises an outwardly extending and downwardly depending lip (105, 107) below which is situated a mouth (61, 67) of the collector. The collector further comprises side walls (75, 79) for channelling waves into the collector mouth. These side walls (75, 79) extend horizontally substantially up to or beyond the lip, partially enclosing a volume of water between the lip and side walls. The collector is placed in its desired location by sealing the mouth (61, 67) with gates (not shown) and floating the structure to its desired location. Control valves are opened to allow water into the collector to sink the structure to the sea bed (63) whereupon the gates are removed.

Also included are stator blades, a fluid pressurizing-accelerating device and exhaust nozzles formed in both sides of each of the first turbine rotor blades in a position adjacent to a trailing edge of each of the first turbine rotor blades.

An air cushion-forming portion of a first chamber communicates with an air cushion-forming portion of a second chamber. Water is supplied to the second chamber via an intake pipe and associated back pressure valves plus adjacent rising pipe. As a result of equivalent pressure variations in the first and second air cushion-forming portions caused by movement of the waves, water is lifted from the second chamber in a pipe via additional back pressure valves along with a further rising pipe plus pump to a higher lying, third chamber and from there to the reservoir.

A wave power apparatus (10) includes a chamber (16) which may be constructed over a coastal gully (12) so that waves (14) cause the water level to rise and fall in the chamber, and so cause air to flow to and fro in a duct (32). A Wells-type biplane turbine (34) in the duct (32) drives a generator (36). The turbine (34) comprises two turbine discs (45) 0.5 m apart, each defining a hub, a plurality of aerofoil section straight blades (80), and an outer ring (56). The ring (56) is sufficiently massive to act as an energy-storage flywheel, and has a greater moment of inertia than the hub and the blades. Each turbine disc (45) might have a kinetic energy of at least 1 MJ when rotating at 1650 rpm.

A power unit comprises a resonator having a mouth located in the sea and containing a body of water and an air cushion above the body of water. This resonator can have a neck defining a relatively small flow area compared with the surface area of the body of water immediately below the cushion. The air cushion is controlled to cause the water to resonate in response to pressure fluctuations resulting from wave motions in the sea, thereby developing fluctuations of increased pressure. The unit is constructed so that the increased pressure fluctuations create a fluid flow, which is then utilized in a suitable manner.
