An apparatus and method are provided for neatening stacks of thin products, such as sliced luncheon meat, within a processing and packaging operation. The neatening apparatus receives an uneven stack of foodstuff slices that are generally horizontally oriented, and the apparatus reorients the stack of foodstuff slices by rotating them through a generally vertical orientation and to a generally horizontal outfeed orientation. A tamping assembly is adjacent to the reorienting assembly, and the tamping assembly contacts the peripheral edges of the foodstuff slices in order to tamp and shake same to a neatened condition. A generally horizontally oriented outfeed assembly receives the thus neatened stack at the location of generally horizontal outfeed orientation.

This invention depicts a web winding apparatus for winding belt-like materials (webs) such as plastic films, paper, thin metallic strips, which are slit to a predetermined width by a slitter. This web winding apparatus has at least one winder unit detachably mounted to a main body of winding apparatus. The or each of the winder units includes a support beam detachably mounted to the main body of winding apparatus, a plurality of pairs of arms provided on the support beam, for holding reels to wind slit webs from opposite sides and winding tension generators provided on the support beam corresponding in number to the reels, for giving a winding tension to the reels. A plurality of winder units are prepared in advance having the aforesaid arrangement, having various arm intervals arranged to accommodate to the widths of the slit, whereby winder units corresponding to the widths of webs are mounted to the winding apparatus. Since the arms secured to the winder unit are of stationary type, the winding quality of the product roll is satisfactory and a change in the width of web can be easily accommodated.

To pick up folded paper sheets, being folded, for example, by a standard folding apparatus (1, 2, 4-6), an endless transport belt or chain (71; 7, 7, 7', 18) retains thereon carrier elements (9) made of highly elastic flat spring steel, being guided by the endless transport means in a path which places the flat spring steel strips edgewise between the folding products at the folding zone, then transport the folded products along the path and then decelerates the folded products while spreading them apart. The latter combined effect is obtained by guiding the transport means over a deflection wheel (11, 16) at the region of attachment of the carrier elements to the transport chain or belt, while retaining the flat strip free end portions, forming hangers, at or close to the center of rotation of the deflection wheel, so that, effectively, the folded paper products will be spread while, at the same time, will be slowed, or have a linear speed of, or close to 0.

A slicing machine with a carriage for the goods to be sliced, a blade against which the goods are drawn to form a slice, a mechanism for carrying away the slices and a blade-cleaning member which is disposed along the rear of the blade and serves to deflect the slicing away from the latter toward the slide conveyor. Between the slice conveyor and the latter member, a plurality of gripper bands are provided to transfer the slices to the conveyor, the gripper band passing around rollers in recesses of the blade cleaning member.

A slicing machine comprises a blade 1, feeding mechanism 8, 9, 11, 12 to feed a product 7, typically a food product, towards the blade 1, and a conveyor system 14 downstream of the blade 1 to form groups of slices. The machine also includes a programmed computer 18 to control the feed rate of the feeding mechanism 8, 9, 11, 12 and control the conveyor system 14 to form groups of slices 13. The programmed computer 18 is programmed to calculate the optimum number of slices and thickness of the slices forming each group in dependence upon physical parameters of the product 7 and to control the feed rate of the feeding mechanism 8, 9, 11, 12 and the conveyor system 14 to form the groups so that the slices in each group are of optimum thickness and there are the optimum number of slices in each group.

The current that drives the motor for a slicing blade is continuously monitored to detect when it rises above a threshold level. This threshold level is related to the resistance to the rotation of the blade that is presented by a product being sliced. When this current rises above the threshold level, the slicing operation is momentarily interrupted. The threshold level is adjustable in accordance with the number of slices that is desired to be trimmed. While the slicing operation is interrupted, the first few irregular slices from the leading edge of the product can be carried away from the location of the slicing blade. Then slicing can resume with the first slice in the first full draft being a full slice.

A stacking conveyor is provided for receiving thin product slices moving along a horizontal path and placing a plurality of slices in stacks of predetermined configuration. One embodiment of the stacking conveyor includes a conveyor belt carried on a fixed position frame and is oscillated to receive a predetermined number of slices forming a stack and then revolved to discharge the formed stack. A second embodiment of the stacking conveyor includes a conveyor belt carried on a movable frame that is reciprocated to receive a slice while moving in one direction and then discharging the slice while moving in the opposite direction. Each of the two embodiments is adapted to be mechanically coupled with an apparatus forming the slices to either revolve the conveyor belt or to displace the conveyor belt at the same speed as the slice being received.

Apparatus for feeding a traveling sheet of fabric material to one receiver roll for winding thereon until it is full, and then cutting the fabric and feeding it onto another receiver roll without interruption of the fabric travel. The apparatus includes a carriage for movement from one receiver roll to another, and pivoted arms mounted on the carriage for movement toward and away from the receiver rolls during movement of the carriage and during the time the receiver rolls are being wound. Driven feeder rollers are mounted on the arms in spaced relation to define a predetermined path of movement for the fabric directed toward a receiver roll, and a cutting element is disposed intermediate the driven feeder rolls to selectively cut the fabric when a full package has been wound on one receiver roll, and fabric directing means are provided to assure that the cut edge of the traveling fabric is guided along its path of movement to the receiver roll for winding thereon.

Apparatus is disclosed for simultaneously transferring a plurality of stacks of sliced or bulk food product from a holding station, such as the output of a slicing and stacking machine, to a receiving station, or the like, for loading and packaging of the food product. The device includes a rapidly and continuously operating accumulating conveyor for transferring a plurality of stacks from the holding station to a transfer station, and a shuttle-like, product-engaging member mounted proximate the transfer station for rapid, reciprocating movement transverse to the conveyor for transferring the plurality of stacks from the transfer station to a loading station. The product-engaging member has a plurality of concave portions, each formed to receive one stack of the plurality of stacks of product. A stop is positioned at the transfer station for releasably detaining a first stack in approximate alignment with a first of the concave portions, and switchs are disposed at the transfer station to sense the presence of a plurality of stacks and to actuate the transverse movement of the product-engaging member. At the loading station a combination of support tines or fingers and knife edges hold the food product level over openings for loading of the product into packages at the receiving station. Upon retraction of the fingers, plungers force the stacks of food product past the knife blades and into packages at the receiving station.
