    Abstract: Raman spectroscopy of chemical and biological samples can be accomplished with photonic sensors amenable to chip-scale integration. In various embodiments, such a photonic sensor includes first and second optical waveguides coupled via an optical ring resonator, the ring resonator configured to resonantly enhance, and selectively couple into the second optical waveguide, a Raman scattering signal generated, when the first waveguide and/or resonator are exposed to a sample, by interaction of an analyte in the sample with excitation light coupled into the first optical waveguide.

    Abstract: A turbomachine includes a housing having an inlet and an outlet. A shaft is rotationally disposed in the housing. The shaft is rotatable about a longitudinal axis. An impeller is coupled to the shaft between the inlet and the outlet and rotates with the shaft. The impeller includes a single impeller inlet and an impeller outlet, a first set of vanes disposed on a first side of the impeller, and a second set of vanes disposed on a second side of the impeller. A passage is formed through a thickness of the impeller. The passage facilitates transmission of fluid from the first side of the impeller to the second side of the impeller such that fluid is supplied to the first set of vanes and the second set of vanes via the single impeller inlet. Transmission of fluid through the impeller reduces net axial thrust imparted to at least one of the impeller and the shaft.

    Abstract: In an embodiment, the present disclosure relates to a method of restoring cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) activity in a subject in need thereof. In some embodiments, the method includes administering a therapeutically effective amount of elesclomol or analog thereof and rescuing defects of cells in the subject with deficiencies or mutations in at least one of SOD1, AT-1, API SI, COA6, SC02, COX6B1, CTRL ATOX1, CCS, GSX1, ATP7A, ATP7B, CLCN5, and CLCN7. In a further embodiment, the present disclosure relates to a method of treating disorders of copper metabolism. In some embodiments, the method includes administering a therapeutically effective amount of elesclomol or analog to a subject, where the disorder is caused by a deficiency or mutation to a gene including, without limitation, SOD1, AT-1, API SI, COA6, SC02, COX6B1, CTR1, ATOX1, CCS, GSX1, ATP7A, ATP7B, CLCN5, CLCN7, or combinations thereof.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing graphene-based materials includes (a) positioning graphite into an inner chamber of a rotatable housing of a rod mill. A plurality of elongate rigid rods are loosely positioned in the housing. In addition, the method includes (b) rotating the housing of the rod-mill after (a). Further, the method includes (c) rod milling the graphite with the rods during (b) to produce a first portion of the graphene-based materials and milled graphite. The first portion of the graphene-based materials include 30 layers or less of graphene and the milled graphite comprises more than 30 layers of graphene.
