摘要: A wireless communications system including at least one base station operative to communicate with terminals on a plurality of carrier frequencies in repetitive time slots defined thereon is operated by assigning an entire time slot or a spreading-code defined subchannel of a time slot to a terminal based on a communications constraint associated with the terminal. The communications constraint may include a performance requirement, such as an information rate or an error rate, and a signal reception condition, such as signal to noise ratio. According to another aspect, a wireless communications system determines a communications constraint associated with a terminal. The system assigns a time slot, a spreading code, a coding rate and a bandwidth to the terminal based on the determined communications constraint. Preferably, the system assigns a time slot, a spreading code, a coding rate and a bandwidth to the terminal such that at least one of an available bandwidth, a number of available time slots, and a number of available spreading codes is optimized. Related apparatus are also described.

摘要: A device and method is provided that transmits a monitor report to the current base station concurrently with the transmission of the informational content carrying signals by embedding the monitor report in the informational content carrying signals. The current base station uses the monitor report to initiate transfer of service for the mobile communication device to the base station with the strongest carrier signal strength by sending appropriate signals to the mobile switching center that in turn signals the base station to take over service for the mobile communication device. A wideband digitizing circuit obtains amplified wideband analog signals from the receiver before channel filtering and demodulation, and converts them to complex digital samples. The digital samples are obtained at a rate greater than the Nyquist rate for the total scanned bandwidth but are only taken during a very short time interval commensurate with the reciprocal of the channel spacing, thereby reducing power consumption to a minimum. The digital samples are then operated on by a microprocessor or signal processor to determine energy in a plurality of channels, preferably using a fast Fourier transform. The analysis results in an indication of the channels containing the strongest signals and this information is provided in the monitor report sent to the current base station.

摘要: A system for Internet Protocol voice communication comprises using both the Internet and wireless communications systems to communicate between two individuals. The speech is encrypted and encoded prior to transmission with an error indication field appended to the speech bits. Formatting for the Internet leg of the communications occurs according to Internet Protocol. Errors arising during the wireless transmission are addressed by appropriately ordering the encryption, error correction coding, and error detection together with the appended error indication field.

摘要: A dual mode telephone is used with a satellite communication adapter. A cellular-type handportable phone is equipped with a connector for the attachment of accessories. This connector provides a satellite communications adapter accessory access to the handset's signal processing resources which may operate in an alterative mode to process signals received from the satellite and converted by the adapter into a suitable form for processing. The processing translates the satellite signals into voice or data, and vice-versa.

摘要: A method for determining the position of a mobile radio telephone in a satellite communication system includes a mobile radio telephone scanning a plurality of paging channels and measuring the signal strength of the paging channels. The mobile radio telephone then selects the paging channel with the strongest signal strength and decodes the information broadcasted on the selected channel. The information contained in the paging channel can include frequencies or timeslots of paging channels in surrounding spot beams. The mobile station then measures the signal strength of paging channels in surrounding spot beams and quantizes the measurements to determine a coarse position of the mobile radio telephone.

摘要: The present invention discloses a CDMA coding method including the steps of converting the information to be transmitted into digital form, error-correction coding the digital information, and assembling the coded symbols into frames having N symbols. Each coded information symbol within a frame is then repeated a first number of times L1 in succession and the sign of select repeated symbols, determined by a spreading code generator, is changed to produce a symbol block of N×L1 symbols. The symbol block is then repeated a second umber of times L2, where for each block repeat, a block sign change is applied to all symbols of the same block; the sign for each block may also be supplied by the spreading code generator. The resulting L2×N×L1 coded and repeated symbols are then modulated upon a radio frequency carrier and transmitted to a receiver simultaneously with similar symbols intended for other receivers, where different information is transmitted to a plurality of receivers. Signals coded for simultaneous transmission to different receivers may include a greater number of information symbols repeated a reduced number L1 times or a lesser number of information symbols repeated a greater number L1 times, while still maintaining the same number of repeated symbols in a block. By assigning specific block-spreading sequences to groups of signals in various adjacent service areas or according to transmitter-receiver distance, strong signals can be better discriminated from weak signals and inter-cell interference can be reduced.

摘要: A power amplifier uses a modulation technique that varies amplitude of a drive signal and, optionally, phase angle of the drive signal. The power amplifier comprises two coupled amplifiers, a first one of which is operated saturated to produce a constant voltage output. The first amplifier is coupled to a second one of the amplifiers via a quarter wave transmission line. The second amplifier is operated in a linear mode to deliver an output signal controlled by an amplitude-modulating signal. The amplitude-modulating signal may be a bipolar modulation signal that produces both positive and negative outputs from the second amplifier that add to or subtract from the output from the first amplifier to develop at a load impedance net output signal amplitudes varying between a minimum or “trough” amplitude and a maximum or “crest” amplitude. The coupling of the first and second amplifiers through a quarter-wave line allows the signal current of the second amplifier to modulate the effective load impedance seen by the first amplifier to provide efficient amplifier coupling.

摘要: A decoder also includes a channel estimator to estimate coefficients describing a channel through which the signal has propagated, a signal predictor that combines the channel estimates with corresponding samples of the signal to obtain a metric, and a metric accumulator to accumulate the metrics for hypothesized symbol sequences to determine the likelihood indications. The hypothesized symbol sequences include partial symbols that select a subgroup of the symbol alphabet. This allows those parts of a symbol that are most important for predicting signal samples to be retained in a hypothesized state while the remaining parts can pass to a path history memory, thereby reducing the number of possible states that must be considered.
