Abstract: A barcode reader has a weigh platter and an off-platter detection assembly. The weigh platter is configured to measure a weight of an object and has a surface extending in a first transverse plane, a proximal edge, a first lateral edge extending non-parallel to the proximal edge, and a distal edge. The off-platter detection assembly includes a light emission assembly and a light detection assembly. The light emission assembly is configured to emit a collimated light beam along the first lateral edge, above the surface. The light diffusing barrier is positioned in a path of the collimated light beam and is configured to diffuse the light beam such that the light diffusing barrier appears to be illuminated when contacted by the light beam and appears not to be illuminated when not contacted by the light beam.

Abstract: At least some embodiments described herein are directed to a machine vision method, which involves capturing both a two-dimensional (2D) image of an object to identify a barcode and determine 3D features, and a three-dimensional (3D) image of the environment. The 3D image data is examined for the presence of the 3D object features. If a feature is missing, a digital fault detection signal is provided. If a feature is present, at least one parameter of the machine vision system is adjusted. The method also includes decoding the barcode and determining the object's orientation based on the barcode location in the 2D image.

Abstract: Bioptic barcode readers with multiple imaging devices are disclosed herein. An example bioptic barcode reader includes a housing with a generally horizontal window and an upright window, a barcode reading device positioned within the housing, a first imaging device positioned within the housing, and a second imaging device positioned within the housing below the first imaging device. The first imaging device has a first field-of-view directed out of the upright window, the second imaging device has a second field-of-view directed out of the upright window, and a first central imaging axis of the first field-of-view intersects a second central imaging axis of the second field-of-view at an intersecting angle that is greater than or equal to 15 degrees and less than or equal to 55 degrees. The second central imaging axis of the second field-of-view extends upward above the generally horizontal window at a second angle that is greater than 0 degrees.

Imaging systems such as bi-optic readers, handheld scanners, and machine vision systems are described using three-dimensional imaging apparatuses and described capturing three-dimensional images and using with captured two-dimensional images.

Abstract: A product verification system for use in bagging areas is disclosed herein. An example product verification system includes a first imaging device having a first field of view (FOV) and a second imaging device having a second FOV. One or more processors of the system are configured to capture first image data from the first imaging device, and identify within the first image data one or more unloaded objects. The processors may also capture second image data from the second imaging device, and identify within the second image data one or more objects entering a loading plane. The processors may also identify identifying characteristics of the one or more objects entering the loading plane, and obtain identification data for the unloaded objects from the unloading plane. The processors may compare the identification data to the identifying characteristics to determine if each of the unloaded objects has entered the loading plane.

Abstract: Imaging systems and methods monitor items associated with a person appearing in predetermined areas in a venue. A person is associated with an item when in a first area, using captured image data and attributes identified therein. The person is subsequently detected at a point-of-sale (POS) or other second area, through captured second image data and attributes identified therein. Responsive to detecting the person at the POS station, the method monitors a checkout transaction for scanning the previously-associated item, wherein failure of that item to be scanned prior to a payment step of a checkout transaction determines an instance of a potential shrink event.

Abstract: An imaging system for synchronizing rolling shutter and global shutter sensors is disclosed herein. An example imaging system includes an illumination source configured to emit illumination lasting a predetermined period, a first imaging sensor, and a second imaging sensor. An example barcode reading and weighing apparatus includes a weigh platter; a scale; an off-platter detection assembly configured to detect an off-platter weigh condition; a processor in communication with the scale and the off-platter detection assembly; and a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the barcode reading and weighing apparatus to, responsive to detecting the off platter condition: compose a weight-conveying message, the weight-conveying message including (i) a weight-conveying field having the weight encoded therein and (ii) overhead information, the overhead information being operative, when the weight-conveying message is received by a POS system, to cause the POS system to not accept the weight for the transaction, the overhead information also not indicating the off-platter weigh condition to the POS system; and send the weight-conveying message to the POS system.
