Abstract:
A method for casting a rocker arm made of light alloy for use in an overhead cam shaft type valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine, which rocker arm includes a thick-walled bearing section to be fitted on a rocker arm shaft and is integrally provided with a wear-resistive piece having a protrusion on its rear surface and adapted to abut a cam. After molten metal has been injected under pressure into a metallic mold for the rocker arm, a secondary pressurizing force directed in the direction of an imaginary center axis of a rocker arm shaft is exerted by means of a pressurizing rod. In the metallic mold for the rocker arm, a sprue is provided close to the position where the wear-resistive piece is disposed with respect to the position where the bearing section is formed, and the direction of the sprue is directed towards the position where the wear-resistive place is disposed.
Abstract:
A mechanical part comprises a sliding section and a sleeve section which are prepared separately. The sliding section is made of a wear resisting material such as ceramics and formed with a planar sliding surface at one of the sides thereof. The sliding section is further formed with a joining portion at the outer periphery thereof. The sleeve section is made of metal and formed with a joining portion at the inner periphery thereof. The joining portions of the sliding section and the sleeve section are joined by interference fit or the like, whereby to allow the sliding surface of the sleeve section to be formed into a crowned shape.
Abstract:
A one-piece, cold-formed rocker arm of the cam-follower type is provided. The rocker arm includes a one-piece metal body cold formed from a metal blank and being of inverted U-shaped cross section throughout most of its length. The body has a top wall with depending, structurally-integral side walls. An intermediate, convex portion of the top wall has an opening extending therethrough with an axle extending between the side walls below the opening. A cam-contacting roller is rotatably mounted on the axle and has a circumferential surface exposed at the opening to engage a cam. The rocker arm body has a recess at one end portion to receive a lifter post and an additional recess at another end portion to receive an end of a valve stem. The one end portion of the body is wider than the remainder of the body. Ribs are formed at the lower edges of the body and extend along the intermediate portion of the body between the two end portions. The outer edges of the ribs do not extend beyond the side walls of the body at the one end portion thereof.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an apparatus and method of utilization of the same of tooling for a robot or the like for installing rocker arm assemblies to the cylinder banks of an engine. A preferred embodiment of the present invention includes jaws to grip the rocker arm assembly, a bolt runner to torque the rocker arm bolt and means to angularly float the jaws, allowing the rocker arm assembly to align itself with the engine cylinder bank push rod and valve spring.
Abstract:
A one-piece, cold-formed rocker arm of the cam follower type is provided. The rocker arm includes a one-piece metal body cold-formed from a metal blank and being of inverted U-shaped cross section substantially throughout its length. The body has a top wall with depending, structurally integral side walls. An intermediate, convex portion of the top wall has a rectangular opening therein exceeding therethrough. A cam-contacting roller is rotatably mounted on an axle carried by the side walls below the rectangular opening. The roller has a circumferential surface extending upwardly through and beyond the rectangular opening to engage a cam. The rocker arm body has a rounded recess formed at one end portion to receive a lifter post on which the rocker arm can pivot. The body has an additional recess at another end portion to receive an end of a valve stem.
Abstract:
A push rod of the type which is used to operably interconnect a valve lifter and a valve operating rocker arm comprising an elongated hollow tube having one or more longitudinally extending corrugations or grooves in the wall thereof to improve the strength of the tube and increase the surface area to promote cooling. The invention also includes a method of making the tube.
Abstract:
A cam follower is constituted by an outer ring which has an outer track surface in its inner circumference; a stud which has an inner track surface opposed to the outer track surface, a flange portion abutting on one side of the inner track surface, a side plate fitting portion and a mounting shaft portion abutting on another side of the inner track surface in this order, and a fiber flow formed continuously from the flange portion to the inner track surface along their outer circumferences; rolling elements which are arranged between the outer track surface and inner track surface; and an inner side plate which is pressed into the side plate fitting portion to work with the flange portion for limiting axial movement of the outer ring and the rolling elements.
Abstract:
A rocker shaft for a valve train of an internal combustion engine, including: a substantially cylindrical outer circumferential surface; and a layer of amorphous hydrocarbon deposited on the substantially cylindrical outer circumferential surface. The rocker shaft is arranged to engage a rocker arm such that the rocker arm is at least partially rotatable about the rocker shaft. A method of forming rocker shaft for a valve train of an internal combustion engine, including: forming a substantially cylindrical outer circumferential surface; and depositing a layer of amorphous hydrocarbon on the substantially cylindrical outer circumferential surface. The rocker shaft is arranged to engage a rocker arm such that the rocker arm is at least partially rotatable about the rocker shaft.
