A natural circulation boiling water reactor system using free-surface steam separation incorporates a series of tubes near the inner wall of its reaction vessel extending from a downcomer to well-above the downcomer. These tubes allow steam bubbles which would otherwise be trapped within the downcomer to escape from the recirculating water toward the steam exit of the vessel. This lowers the volume of steam in the downcomer, lowering the water velocity required to maintain a given volume of water recirculation. The reduced water velocity results in less carryunder which results in smaller voids in the reactor core. The smaller voids provide longer fuel burnups and enhance reactor stability.

A natural circulation type boiling light-water reactor comprises a pressure vessel, a reactor core disposed within said pressure vessel to heat light water so as to generate main steam, a steam outlet provided in a wall of said pressure vessel for drawing out the main steam therethrough to supply the same to a turbine system, and a steam path along which the main steam flows from the reactor core to the steam outlet. The reactor further comprises a steam guide for prolonging the steam path and/or a radially increased chimney for reducing the velocity of the main steam flowing through the steam path. These causes radioactive isotope .sup.16 N contained in the main steam to flow within the pressure vessel for a time period exceeding its own half-life, so that the inventory of .sup.16 N in the main steam directed towards the turbine system is reduced remarkably. In consequence, shield structures for piping and turbine systems can be reduced in size and weight.

A municipal water supply system for providing potable water under pressure from sea water including a nuclear reactor heated boiler for raising the temperature of sea water to at least 250.degree. F and at superatmospheric pressure means for conveying the superheated steam to an expansion turbine, whereby the superheated steam drives the turbine while the temperature of the steam is reduced to about the boiling point of water at atmospheric pressure, a heat exchanger for condensing the exhaust from the turbine while simultaneously preheating incoming sea water to the system, and liquid pumping means driven by the expansion turbine for conveying the condensed water under pressure to a municipal distribution system. Additionally, means are provided for controlling the temperature within the boiler chamber by controlling the volume of incoming sea water.

The steam separators are secured together in groups, and each group is clamped to the lid. Each steam separator has a rising tube and each unit has a bell-shaped casing common to the group and surrounding the steam separators to provide a falling surface for the water separated in the unit. Deflection caps connected together in groups corresponding to the groups of steam separators are mounted above the open tops of the steam outlet tubes of the separators.

A structure for increasing the separation capacity of a centrifugal-force separator for separating water from a steamwater mix includes a separator having a cylindrical turbulence chamber, and an inlet in the chamber for receiving the mix therein and for directing the same tangentially along the inner wall of the chamber and imparting to the mix a spin motion for separating the water from the mix and for forming a funnel-like figure of steam. The chamber has an axial outlet in the upper region thereof for passing the steam therefrom and a water outlet in the lower region thereof for passing the water therefrom. The structure has a dish-like plate disposed coaxially with respect to the chamber at the lower region thereof for stabilizing the funnel-like figure.

A water-separator-superheater structure includes a horizontally disposed casing having a drum-shaped configuration into which wet steam is admitted at the bottom portion of the drum. The wet steam is caused to flow upwardly at an angle through a plurality of horizontally disposed wire netting mattresses arranged in superposed stepped relation which serve to separate out the moisture which drains off through the bottom of the casing, and the dried steam then passes through a tube type superheater to a discharge outlet. The tubes of the superheater between which the dried steam passes are disposed at a steeply inclined angle in order to promote self-draining.
