    摘要: A cylindrical shell enclosure has mounted interiorly thereof in cantilever manner four upstanding laminated planar flexible resilient electroacoustic transducer reeds. A separate inertia weight is affixed to the top edge of each reed. An acoustic wave impinging on the side wall of the submerged enclosure will cause relative movement between the enclosure and a weight if the wave direction has a component transverse to the plane of the reed on which the weight is mounted. The reeds are mounted in quadrature so that wave direction detection is provided by comparing the electrical outputs of the reeds. Viscoelastic damping pads may be affixed between the side ends of each of the weights and respective upstanding rigid arms secured to an interior surface of the enclosure.

    摘要: An amphibious personal audio system is provided. The system includes a band for encircling a person's end. An audio device is secured to the band for generating an audio signal. The audio device is hermetically sealed. Speakers are electrically coupled to the audio device for converting the audio signal to an audio sound. The speakers and the electrical coupling are hermetically sealed. Earpiece assemblies are acoustically coupled to the speakers for transmitting the sound to a person's ears. The earpiece assemblies have an opening for transmission of sound to the user's ear canal, the earpiece assembly being adapted to substantially hermetically seal the user's ear canal around the opening.

    摘要: A self-orienting, directionally sensitive particle velocity transducer with an axially magnetized magnet which, displaced by gravity, floats off-center in a chamber filled with ferromagnetic fluid. Wire coils affixed coaxially to the chamber ends asymmetrically intersect the magnet's flux lines. Axial chamber rotation results in gravitationally induced sideways movement of the magnet to maintain its equilibrium position. An impinging sound wave causes relative movement between the low inertia chamber-coil assembly and the high inertia magnet, thereby inducing a voltage in the coils--a relatively high voltage for vertical movement due to vertical assymetry, but a relatively low voltage for horizontal movement due to horizontal symmetry. Axial sensitivity is low because the ferromagnetic fluid filling the narrow gap between the magnet and the chamber ends resists relative axial movement and any induced voltages in the coils cancel. Substitution of an eccentrically weighted, axially polarized, composite magnet divided into oppositely polarized halves allows a smaller chamber and makes assymetry/symmetry independent of gravitationally induced displacement, thus allowing configuration for any direction of sensitivity.

    摘要: An optoacoustic hydrophone for detection of acoustic waves in a fluid such as sea water. The hydrophone includes an optical waveguide comprising a fiber optic input lead, a fiber optic sensor, and a fiber optic exit lead, an optical subassembly and a signal processor. A coherent light beam generated by the optical subassembly is transmitted through the input lead and the sensor which is disposed in the fluid. Acoustic waves in the fluid modulate the index of refraction of the fiber optic sensor thereby modulating the transmitted light beam. The modulated light beam is directed through the fiber optic exit lead to a focus on one of two photodetectors. The other photodetector is oriented for receipt of light reflected from a partially reflective mirror disposed between the input fiber optic lead and the fiber optic sensor. The two light beams impinging on respective photodetector are combined with unmodulated light beams of slightly different frequencies to produce an interference pattern at each photodetector. Each photodetectors produces an electrical signal representative of the interference pattern and the respective electrical signals are applied to a phase meter. The phase meter produces an output signal representative of the acoustic wave alone which corresponds to the difference between the two electrical signals provided by respective photodetectors. The disclosed optoacoustic hydrophone effectively cancels common mode lead noise resulting from towage of the optical waveguide through the fluid. Pressure effects in optical fibers created by other physical mechanisms are also sensed by the present apparatus.

    摘要: A construction and method of producing an elongated underwater acoustic array includes a plurality of interconnected hydrophones and circuit modules protected by a plastic foam cushioning sheath, covered with a tough, essentially acoustically transparent hose-like jacket and containing a plurality of aramid fiber ropes as strength members to carry the tensile loads on the array. An elongated tube-like fabric retaining member is interposed between the sheath and the exterior hose jacket which is longitudinally stitched to provide a plurality of spaced parallel tubes, each of which is of just sufficient diameter to contain one of said strength members. The strength members are terminated at a connector at each end of the array, and a spacer member is placed near each connector to spread the strength member ropes to the desired diameter. The spacer members and the adjacent ends of the retaining members are each cemented to the strength member ropes.

    摘要: A waterproof pouch to house a personal stereo cassette tape player or radio electrically connected by means of a retractile cable to a pair of waterproof headphones. The waterproof pouch has a closure enabling the pouch to repeatedly be hermetically sealed and reopened. A tubular belt loop is attached to one side of the pouch and secures a belt and buckle combination which fastens around the user's waist. A connector permanently and hermetically secures the electrical cable extending from the exterior to the interior of the pouch. The electrical cable in a coiled retractile form extends from the connector and splits into a Y-shape with both legs electrically attached to the waterproof headphones. Both waterproof headphones consist of a rigid disc with a waterproof earphone mounted on one side and a bracket mounted on the opposite side such that an elastic headband extends through the bracket. The headband is adjustable in length and secures the headphones to the user's head. Both waterproof earphones have pliable sleeves which form a hermetic seal with the user's ear canal to prevent water from entering the ear canal and disrupting the audio program heard by the user. A thin plastic membrane is positioned behind the diaphragm of the earphone to waterproof the earphone when not positioined in the user's canal. This invention enables the user to listen to a high fidelity stereo audio program while active in the water.
