Abstract: A sample comprising a first substance and a second substance is modified by breaking down molecular bonds of the second substance of the sample to form a modified sample having altered surface enhanced luminescence (SEL) characteristics to reduce overlapping of SEL characteristics of the first substance in the second substance. Surface enhanced luminescence data resulting from excitation of the modified sample is collected. Characteristics of the first substance based upon the collected surface enhanced luminescence data are identified.

Abstract: An example overfill-tolerant microfluidic structure can include an inlet microfluidic channel. A sample chamber can be connected to the inlet microfluidic channel to receive liquid from the inlet microfluidic channel. A gas-permeable liquid barrier can be connected to the sample chamber and positioned to allow gas to flow out of the sample chamber. An overflow chamber can be connected to the inlet microfluidic channel. A capillary break can be positioned between the inlet microfluidic channel and the overflow chamber. The capillary break can include a narrowed opening with a smaller width than a width of the inlet microfluidic channel. In some examples, the gas-permeable liquid barrier can allow gas to flow out of the sample chamber at a pressure lower than the break pressure, and prevent liquid from flowing out of the sample chamber at the break pressure.

Abstract: An image formation device includes a support, a fluid ejection device, and a first porous element. The support is to support movement of a substrate along a travel path, while the fluid ejection device is located along the travel path to deposit droplets of ink particles within a liquid carrier onto the substrate to at least partially form an image on the substrate. The first porous element is located downstream along the travel path from the fluid ejection device to be in contact against the substrate to remove, via electroosmotic flow through the first porous element, at least a portion of the liquid carrier from the substrate.
