Abstract:
An OFDMA communication system includes a plurality of terminals, with at least one of the terminals including at least one type of multi-user decoder adapted to decode a signal intended for the at least one terminal received on a subchannel of the system and adapted to decode at least a portion of an interfering signal received on the subchannel. The system also includes a plurality of base stations. Each of the base stations may be in communication with others of the base stations for exchanging information about data throughput for particular terminals in cells of the system using particular subchannels in the cells. Each of the base stations assigns the subchannels to terminals in the cell of the base station so as to maximize data throughput in the entire system.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for subcarrier selection for systems is described. In one embodiment, a method for subcarrier selection for a system employing orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) comprises partitioning subcarriers into groups of at least one cluster of subcarriers, receiving an indication of a selection by the subscriber of one or more groups in the groups, and allocating at least one cluster in the one or more groups of clusters selected by the subcarrier for use in communication with the subscriber.
Abstract:
An improved system and method for determining and tracking the carrier offset in a communications system. In an exemplary implementation, sampled spread spectrum digital signals are compensated with an expected carrier offset and stripped of pseudo-noise codes to produce demodulated signals. The demodulated signals are applied to a carrier offset estimator. The carrier offset estimator divides pairs of demodulated signals with a predetermined interval to produce results containing phase change information. The results are then averaged, and the average is normalized with respect to the predetermined interval to yield a new estimate of the carrier offset. The expected carrier frequency is adjusted based on the new offset estimate for frequency compensation in subsequent reception and transmission operations.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for increasing the capacity and quality of code-division-multiple-access (CDMA) communications in a near-far and frequency-selective fading environment is disclosed. The invention can be utilized in both synchronous and asynchronous CDMA systems. For convenience, only applications of this invention to synchronous CDMA are described herein. Unique to this invention is that using measurements from a receiver and multiple receivers at the base station, propagation channel parameters associated with a plurality of subscribers are determined without the use of training sequences. The channel parameters are used to calculate any individual user's signature waveform and reconstruct its transmitted signal from the received data. This invention can also be implemented at base stations with multiple antennas or/and fractionally spaced measurements to further improve signal quality by incorporating spatial and temporal diversities. When used at the mobile sites, the invention can alleviate the synchronization problem and mitigating frequency-selective fading.
Abstract:
The present method provides a short, convergent total synthesis of novel intermediates in the synthesis of (.+-.)-camptothecin and related compounds. The synthesis scheme includes a novel 4+1 radical annulation followed by another cyclization to simultaneously assemble rings B and C of the Camptothecin compound. In the synthesis, the following novel precursor is reacted with a phenyl isocyanide: ##STR1## The resulting tetracyclic intermediates comprise a quinoline fused to a pyrrolidine ring, with the pyrrolidine ring being fused to an alpha-pyridone ring. The tetracyclic intermediates thus comprise the A, B, C, and D rings characteristic of camptothecin and camptothecin derivatives, and are easily convertible to camptothecin and camptothecin derivatives via hydroxymethylation and oxidation.

Abstract:
A bipolar electrode comprises an intermediate layer comprising one or more carbon materials. The bipolar electrode further comprises first and second layers disposed on opposite surfaces of the intermediate layer and configured to act as an anode and a cathode. The first and second layers comprise at least one of one or more electrically conductive carbon materials and one or more conductive polymers. A supercapacitor desalination device and a method for making the bipolar electrode are also presented.
Abstract:
A voltage converter can be switched among two or more modes to produce an output voltage tracking a reference voltage that can be of an intermediate level between discrete levels corresponding to the modes. One or more voltages generated from a power supply voltage, such as a battery voltage, can be compared with the reference voltage to determine whether to adjust the mode. The reference voltage can be independent of the power supply voltage.
